Stuff you want to see explained in a short video
« on: November 14, 2013, 08:05:50 pm »
This is a topic to post your requests for explanations of things you struggle with.

If i can make a short video about it i will publish it here.
Sort of a fundamentals friday , but open for all.

How do I keep electrons from pilling up on the floor under my wall sockets?

(I tried stuffing them back in with a butter knife, didn't work out)

Dr Diesel, did you forget to duct tape the sockets closed after you stuffed the electrons back in?  It always works for me  ;D

Semi - high speed PCB routing - no GHz hardcore, something as "trivial" as 100MHz. Since all those high speed ARM micros are widely available, this becomes quite a topic - how do I route my 50MHz SPI bus.

hmmm... this has more to do with termination

General transmission line theory

Multiphase buck converters

Group delay/dispersion in microstrip vs stripline

OK asking a bit much, but there's a lot of academic info but less practical

i don't do theory. no formula's !
transmission lines are very math heavy ..

switching regulators looks like an interesting topic. many people have trouble with that...

pcb routing for fast signals ( actually this is more a termination problem. the chips handling really fast signals have internal termination on board... )
that is interesting stuff. i can cover some transmission line stuff in there.

The kind of topics i'm thinking about is the stuff that keeps recurring on the forum. basic stuff that anyone should be able to do , yet still the questions keep coming...

opamps is another such topic.

Magnetics!

OK, I know this is a vastly complicated field. But basic things like selecting inductors for DC-DC converters, etc. Especially when many of the datasheets don't really tell you much. I'm starting to catch up now, but I'd still love to hear about it, and I've seen tons of questions about DC-DCs that ended up with "that's a poorly chosen inductor".

General transmission line theory

Separate subject, but I could put something together on utility line transmission?

I would love to see this explained:
feedback loop stability? its not really as fundamental, but a topic not many of us understand, and very important in most circuits...

e.g. pole and zero compensation, bandwidth limiting, etc,.

It's a subject that many struggle with (can you count how many people had problems with oscillating constant current loads?).
<fellbuendel> it's arduino, you're not supposed to know anything about what you're doing
<fellbuendel> if you knew, you wouldn't be using it

that is not doable. it depends form circuit to circuit. you need to analyse the complete circuit in detail. there is no checklist to solve such a problem.

There are so many parameters to a component, and datasheets don't always list all the ones that might be important to a particular project! Could just choose an entry on a datasheet as a topic. An example I can think of seeing a couple of times recently is mosfet gate threshold voltage (example) Hfe & fT of a transistor?  Not just what the term means, but how it can break your design when you forget to consider it.

Almost anything where theory falls apart a bit in practice.  You seem to have lots of tales of "paper engineers" missing practical realities (I seem to recall you mentioning the differences between types of capacitors as an example once); I suggest any one of them would probably make a nice short video.  As I have extremely limited practical experience, I welcome such lessons.

I am but an egg

My request would be do not do basic stuff. Basic stuff is everywhere. Talk more about more advanced stuff. Go through a datasheet of a MOSFET and explain what all those Ciss-ess are for. How do you design a drivers for H-brigde and talk about the pitfalls that you can easily fall into (dv/dt triggered turn-on). Decoupling, Thermal management - how mouch power can you dissipate in a SMD mount LM7805. How much current can you push throug a 350mA LED in a short pulse. Failure modes of various component: tantalum caps, electrolytic caps, LEDs, diodes, MOSFETs, resistors and how this affects circuit design. Circuit protection undervoltage, overvoltage, power good, ESD protection. Impact of mechanical stresses on PCB and components. I am just throwing ideas here but I hope you see my point.
