if only the through hole resistor have this kind of coding, we wont be needing the calculator and the color chart.

The thing that amuses me about surface mount resistors was the reason for using colour bands in the first place.

They couldn't print the numbers small enough.

Meanwhile technology has moved on, and now optometrists are doing a roaring trade  ;D

I don't see the point in any of those calculators, I can remember the basic code.

An EIA-96 chart would be very handy though.

they'd be for people who can't, or live by einstein's principle of never memorize something that you can look up. if its good enough for einstein ;)

I made no conscience effort to memorise it, it just happened. Remembering certain things is good because recalling is quicker than looking it up - I could tell you the value of a resistor before you even have chance to look at the chart.

Nop , the color bands are still a great idea ...  you have  " many chances "  if you work with out schematic ,
to recognize the exploded - burned resistance, from the color bands.

Plus it doesn't matter how the resistor is oriented, you never have the problem that the value is facing the PCB or some other inaccessible area. I often have this problem with things like electrolytics and diodes. But this obviously is of no concern for SMD.
