I am interested in other people's Gaming/Workstation/Everyday builds if you make your own custom PCs.

To start here is mine.

AMD A10 6800K Richland Based Quad Core APU (With a radeon 8000 series card that goes unused.)
I got 16 gigs of DDR3 GIEL memory.
a 500GB 850 EVO SSD by Samsung.
a 2TB Hitatchi server grade 7.2k Sata 3 hard drive
a GeForce GTX 970, 1664 CUDA cores 4 GB GDDR5, KBoost at 1.4 Ghz ACX 2.0 Cooler  by EVGA.
An In Win (Forgot the model) white case.
Some random Sata DVD burner I had.
And a biostar Full ATX motherboard (FM2)

This puppy is made for gaming, rendering, and programming large games.

It does good at all of it pretty much maxing out any game you throw at it,
and finishing a 1:30 hour render in about 30 minutes.
Also it runs NetBeans and VS 2013, so I'm happy about that.  :-+

-MIGHTY i3, second most expensive version
-MSI Radeon 6950 2GB reference card (got it second hand for half price)
-8gb ram
-big SSD
-smaller SSD
-big green really heavy case
-dust (lots)
-semi-broken 3.5" front panel card reader/fan controller thingy
-Antec 750W PSU
-Super nice LG blu-ray disk drive
-Cheap Gigabyte mobo

It plays anything I want it to fine, so I've had no reason to fiddle with it. I used to play PC games quite a lot, but I've not even started Steam in nearly two years now. However fun it may be, I can always find something more productive to do instead sitting on the PC for hours.

hmm, I don't even know what's in my crate anymore. *runs lshw*

- Core 2 Quad Q8300, 2.5 GHz
- 4 GB of DDRsomething at 800 MHz
- MSI G31TM-P35 board
- 500 GB hard disk, WD5000AAKS-0
- Some Radeon HD 5000 series (neither lshw nor lspci knows which one it is and I don't remember, probably the cheapest one)
- NFI what power supply I've got, but it hasn't fallen over yet
- dust
- box
- USB wifi dongle

Clearly this is not a gaming rig ;) Though it was no cold molasses when I built it

As it's my work/layout machine the key is what's plugged into it - a pair of somewhat large LCD monitors, a Model M, a trackball "mouse" and an Agilent GPIB card ;D

Been meaning to overclock the CPU, but honestly I'm not really bottlenecked by it, and I've been having odd stability issues I haven't been able to trace the cause of.

Since a picture says more than a thousand words, i will show a (old) photo of my setup. You guys figure out the rest... (Okay, i had 5 minutes of boredom, so i looked up my specs. See below...)
By the way, notice the ropy contraption at the left corner of the graphics card. I guess that was about 2..3 years ago when i attempted to prevent the cards butt flapping in the wind in case i move the PC around. I have to say, I am not proud of that  ;D  I removed it after a short time, replacing it with a proper rubber bumper between the CPU/RAM cooler and the back of the graphics card...

Case: Silverstone Temjin TJ08-E
PSU: Seasonic X-650 Gold (totally overpowered for my configuration, but i had the PSU already and it is semi-fanless)
CPU: i7-3770 (no K version, because 3770k does not have VT-d)

Graphics: Asus GTX670-DC2-2GD5
System SSD: Samsung SSD830 128GB

(P.S.: It might look like me being an Asus fanboy. I ain't. It just so happened that Asus components were often the best fit for my particular requirements...)

Really cool! While building my PC I had to ghetto mount a fan. I got a 2pin fan off an old PSU that went bust. The 2 pin connector doesn't fit into any 3pin headers, so I took a Molex to 3pin fan adapter, chopped the connector off, and hard soldered it to the fan.

Also it's a 140 mm fan and my case can only hold 120 mm so I had to wedge it into the case.

Win 7 32 bit

Runs everything i want/need. I have at least 5 more of those motherboards laying around. And piles of those drives.

I have 4 of those machines at home. All identical. Makes it easy to re-image.

Logitech K400 keyboard. Seriously not ideal for typing comfort, but it's very compact on a crowded bench + works well off the bench as well (like a couch).

I now run Linux Mint 17 on this machine, but I still have a Windows installation for some games which cannot run on LM17.
I've been planning to upgrade my graphics card to NVIDIA for some time (GTX960 or 970), but recently I got a PS4 instead to offload my gaming needs out of the PC world. This has been a logical choice for me for various other reasons, although I strongly believe that PC gaming is much cheaper (Steam sales..) and attractive to many.

All my machines are now Intel Xeon's on a Supermicro board with ECC RAM and I've never looked back. Most solid machines I've ever used.

This graphics card... I had to buy a new case for it, it's basically a fullsize card. The heatsink is so heavy it warped the board and actually didn't make proper contact, It is now held on with an extra tie-wrap. On the box it had a picture of a jet fighter, that's what it sounds like if you stress it. I think it has a TDP of 250w...

The SSD is by far the best thing ever. Load times are pretty much non-existant. Only downside is that every other computer now feels painfully slow, especially laptops.

The raid 0 setup has been disturbingly reliable. I created it on my previous pc, a core2duo (with also an Intel chipset). It was just a matter of plugging them in my current machine and enabling raid in the bios and it magically worked. So much for all those horror stories about onboard raid 0 compatibility issues.

I built mine for realtime video (as seen in my blog post) about 6 months or so ago, and secondary to that CAD and Sketchup with V-Ray. Reliability was a big factor in parts choice also.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with it, but next one will be Xeon I think, because even with all that grunt, 3D renders still take a looooong time.

EDIT: I always check out the old (but always updated) Atomic forum 'kitlist' post to get a good guide of the price/ performance sweetspot when doing a new build.

I added 2 250GB drives that a friend gave me and an extra 2GB of memory that came off my wife's $250 system after upgrading hers from 2GB to 4GB :)

This box is just for electronics and it can do all I need it to do :)

1. Who is Lainey Schmidt?
2. What is a "PFC bypass", what's its purpose? (I would read this as bypassing/disabling "power factor correction", but doing that makes little sense to me :-// )

My main "go to" PC is still a Core 2 Duo with 2 gig of ram, 6 terabytes of HDD, 256 gig SSD, and an 8800 GTX :P It's also my main development PC, but I also have distcc running on every machine on my network to help with bigger builds. If I used VMs at all this machine would have probably being retired a long time ago though.

I've a nice little gaming/media PC too though that only really gets used when my main one can't do full settings at 1080p, surprisingly that's only just becoming a regular occurrence. That's a quad core i5, 16 gig of ram, and a 760 ti.
