Recommened stuff list
« on: January 22, 2013, 09:14:01 pm »
Hi Dave, and forum readers !

I'm relatively new, but already becoming addicted to the eev video blogs :)
I have a Fluke 110 here, that I want to replace, but my local dealer (conrad.nl) charges 685 euro for a Fluke 87V/E, that can't be right, can it?

This searching for meters, got me thinking,
could we build a list of  recommend tools, suppose I need a scope, or an ESR meter, or a multimeter, what's a good buy right now?

Of course it would have to have different quality grade stuff, so like:

MultiMeters:

Good stuff: Fluke 87, expect to pay ~ $300
Low-cost:  [name of some non-Chinese cheapish but still OK multimeter under ~ $100, do they exist?]

Scope:
Top notch:  Tektronics TDS3000, for about ~ $3000 (just guessing, not saying it is good advise)
Low-cost: Rigol DS1052E, for about ~325

Every good recommendation would probably need a short story/description of the type of use, for example, like dave blogs the Fluke 233 might be
nice for industrial electrical use, but maybe the 87 might better for electronics.

What do you think?

greetings,

Jan

You basically are asking people to summarise all the threads in this forum into a list for you cuz you can't be asked to read them?

I wouldn't want to have to read an entire forum, so I think it's a fair enough request. Sadly I doubt it's that easy, though, given that we all have different needs and preferences - and the fact that we like to argue about them is one reason why the forum has so much to read through to begin with.

Personally I have a no-name "830" type multimeter in my toolbox, a Keithley 2000 on my bench, a Fluke 289 that's rarely used and lives in a cupboard, and a Fluke 89-IV which is the closest thing I have to an "everyday" meter. My scope is an old Tek 754D, similar in spec to a TDS3054 but bigger, much heavier, and less than 1/3 of the price. I'd have no real use for a DS1052E, though they're clearly popular.

The topic of multimeters seems to provoke a lot of heated debate, but I regard them as more or less interchangeable for most purposes. Arguments rage over safety (a big deal if you're working on high energy circuits, but probably not otherwise), ruggedness (important if you're especially clumsy), and accuracy. On that particular topic, I'd suggest that most meters are more accurate than most people need for most of the time - and if you know you have a particular need for accurate measurement, you probably know what you're looking for anyway. I have different meters for different specific purposes; the 830 is small enough to pocket, the 289 I bought for a specific job that required data logging, the K2000 is great for 4 wire resistance measurements of thick power cables, and the 89-IV is just a really good, clear, accurate meter.

Maybe people could start a section in the wiki. That thing is kind of empty. I was thinking of adding info on some of the gear I have that seems to be absent on the internet.

Yea, basically what I'm requesting is a listing of the stuff David names in EEVblog #168, with a link to a specific EEVBLog for more info if available. Otherwise maybe a website with specs. I think a wiki page would be a great place to put this. I'm willing to help create it, I love watching EEVBlogs :)

David: could you create such a page for me? (I understand new pages go directly through you only..)

And maybe, David, you could to an update of the #168, are there new players in town? Anything you would no longer recommend or add?

Greetings,

Jan

+1 for the wiki idea, I think that would be a great way to organize product reviews and summaries of forum discussion.

I've been following marmad's adventures with the the DS2072, but there are currently 12 pages of posts (not to mention his software topic which has a significant post count), and still more to come as it's quite an active topic.  :phew: A nice Wiki page summary linking to key posts, video/text reviews, etc. would make it easier for others to figure out what the current state of the product is.

The price u got for a Fluke 87V a kinda good. In europe they retail for around 550-600€ So Your price is actually not bad. But you can get used one on auction sites for $130-150.

As for scope if you are willing to spend that kind of money, then you could consider new Rigols and Agilent Infiniivision series. They start from about $1-2k.

+1 for Wiki idea.

I love the smell of FR4 in the morning!
