Liebherr, smartdevice
« on: November 06, 2017, 03:37:18 pm »
So, I bought myself a new fridge, Liebherr kbes4350, and found that I can buy an "smartdevicebox" to plug into it, and camera's to see what's inside etc.

BUT.. these are not available in Norway until mid-next year they say, so I ask, I can buy it in Germany and put it into my fridge, and they say this: "it’s technically not possible to buy the SDB in Germany and use it in Norway" ??
WTF?
Do companies still make region specific stuff today??

There's nothing a bit of technological know-how won't fix, but you've discovered one of the joys of the IoT and rights management. Though I honestly don't know why on Earth one would want to have pictures of his food every time one closes the refrigerator door. Does it come with an automatic Instagram upload feature, so you can upload pictures of food before it's cooked too?

I must be getting old.

Over 230 Euro for a camera that goes into your fridge?  :o

This IoT thing is just getting stupid. Most home appliances don't need to be "smart", they just need to do the one thing they are designed to do and to do it reliably. For a fridge, that's keeping food cold/frozen.

That's what the camera helps with.  It allows you to see what's inside the fridge without having to open the door.  You could get the same benefit by having a glass door like they do in supermarkets.

So does opening the door and having a look. Much quicker than logging into a smart phone application. Letting a bit of cold air out of the fridge won't spoil food.

I get that it's probably designed for when you're not at home to see what you have in the fridge (while you're out shopping), but people for many decades have got along just fine by making shopping lists and/or using their memory.

I put this in the same category as using GPS navigation over a street directory. I mean I love GPS but I sometimes do use printed maps. I'll be willing to bet that kids that are just starting to drive these days probably wouldn't have the skills to read a street map. Our machines and devices are getting smarter, while we're getting dumber.

The "smartest" feature I'd like in a fridge is a temperature display and perhaps alarm if it goes too high. Anything else is just wank.

Yes, the problem is that this fridge have an display for this.. that is covered by the door :)
So if I could get the plug alone, the "smartdevice" plug, then I could get the temperature on my mobile.. and yes, it already have an alarm that goes of if the door is left open.

Camera could be nice to check the content of the fridge when you are in the shop, my gf have the habit of not saying if there is something I need to buy, so it would be helpful so I don't have to do the round-trip, but I think the camera is mostly an gadget.

But I don't understand that it cannot technically work if one buy the item from Germany, I have to wait until mid-2018, not if it is useful or not :)
