Rare 4-pin Mini DIN USB cable (where to find this)
« on: January 03, 2024, 04:53:18 am »

I'm looking for a USB cable with 4 pin mini DIN  with the normal other end to PC. But I couldn't find even one selling it. They only have the 4 pins mini DIN not equal distant or like the following:

Have you not seen anything like the 4 pin with equal distance?  Why is it so rare? Where to find it and in USB cable like the following selling me for $400 which is so expensive and unjustifiable.  ^-^

Yes. Looks very similar. Is Lemo pin compatible with DIN or mini-DIN. If Din, Are the pins in the Lemo compatible with the following?

That last image looks like a Kycon KPPX-4P DC power plug, however as oPossum pointed out, the photo of the cable looks like a Lemo FGG.0B.304, and the connector on the pinout diagram has distinctive LEMO features.  I believe the two are *not* compatible so either make some very careful shell and pin diameter measurements and match them up to the datasheets, or if you are in a hurry, buy one of each and see what fits.

Unless you can order the OEM lead from the equipment manufacturer, you'll need to make up the lead yourself - take an ordinary USB 2.0 A to B (printer) lead, hack off the B plug, beep it out in case the wire color is non-standard, and similarly confirm the ground pin position - as your pinout diagram has a list of pin numbers but no indication which is which on the connector, you'll probably need to open the equipment, identify Vbus and Gnd and work it out from there.    If you get D+ and D- swapped its non-harmful but doesn't work (fails enumeration).

Is it my eyes, or is that not LEMO stamping on the plug?

Assuming the $400 cable in the OP is actually the one needed, then:

Is it my eyes, or is that not LEMO stamping on the plug?

Beyond reasonable doubt.

On the balance of probability, looking at the datasheet, it is this one.

LEMO connectors are not cheap.

I've seen them used on custom built race cars for connecting a laptop to the ECU from within the drivers seat.

The following is how the USB socket look likes. It's not really a LEMO?  Then what is it?

Just share what the equipment is, rather than these blurry-ass photos.

What do those have to do with anything? They’re big environmentally sealed USB connectors (i.e. a regular USB port with a large circular shell around them), not the actual 4-pin lemo connector shown by OP.

"Finding Lemo" :D

I agree with others that this isn't a DIN. Just get the plug and put it on a USB cable yourself. Note that the Chinese have compatible connectors too, at a fraction of the price but nearly the same quality:

There are thousands of LEMO connectors. I'm selecting one that will work. Their outside diameter range from 1.4 to 5.2 mm (about 0.055" to 0.2"). What is the outside diameter must I choose for a USB cable?  What is the best quality USB cable with the PC adapter side already assembled? I just want to solder the LEMO side and not the other side too.

Measure the dimensions of the plug on your equipment.

Note that besides the anonymous Chinese companies aforementioned, ODU and Tensility are also brands that claim to have Lemo-compatible connectors. In fact I found the manual you got those images from, and it uses ODU's name for the connector, despite clearly showing a Lemo in the image, so that is very likely to work too.

First of all. I don't have the equipment yet. So I don't know its dimension. You think the one at amazon would work?

If yes, then I'd order the $32 at amazon first instead of acquiring the $50 Lemo which can take 4 months (Digikey lead time is 16-25 weeks) to arrive.

If you'd mention the product manufacturer and model that this is supposed to connect to, then people might be able to provide a useful answer.

Maybe the ebay auction is still ongoing and he does not want more interested parties...  ::)

In which case I recommend to wait until the bid has been won and the item actually arrives, so proper measurements of that connector can be taken.

What?

I plan to get the $32 Eonvic at amazon to get ready.

I'll write a new thread about the unit because I have many questions about it.. to avoid messing up this thread with off topic.

Thanks to darkspr1te for the amazon link. Yes, it will work because I saw in another website the inside of the 4 pin LEMO clone.

How the heck can people tell you whether it’ll work if you refuse to disclose what it needs to be used with?

It’s both frustrating and perplexing to me that people come here for help but refuse to disclose even the most fundamental information, hoarding it like it’s some state secret. You’re far from the first to do this, and I’m sure you won’t be the last, but that doesn’t make it any less perplexing and frustrating.

Lemo connectors come in a large variety of sizes that basically look the same, so matching by visuals alone (without measurements) is no guarantee.

Just buy the item. Then remove the jack and replace with any connector of your choice that will fit the hole or an enlarged hole. That way you know what you are working with. DONE!

Now, you are going to tell me how you want to keep it "original".
