Thanks everyone for the web consultation...
« on: October 17, 2011, 07:47:41 pm »
You probably noticed, I've been very quiet for the last week or two. It's because I've been forcing my lazy self to put my site online.

Here is what I've been working on:

A sample page:
It's tested on IE, Firefox, iPhone, and iPad(it's so beautiful in ipad) No, signup page yet and still working on bugs.

www.flipqa.com/flash.php?f=[1]ee90470f1fe8632afa41841ffe202ce1

If it doesn't work, maybe I am updating the codes and messed up something real bad :'(

PS: on the multiple choices with arrow section, press the shuffle button(if you're on the ipad or iphone) else press either the page up key or (the top middle center of the screen) That's because the first image hasn't been properly loaded.

--edit--
You need to copy the link and paste it into the address box.

Thanks, PStevenson. I am glad you like it. I got more, go to the site and type in "funny", that's all my 'public' flashcards.

Before you go, here is the navigation keys:
Left arrow key: Go back to previous page.
Right arrow key: Go to next card.
PageUP: Shuffle the deck.
Home key: Start Over
PageDown: Show what's in the deck
Space key inside answer box: move to next card.
ESC: Will exit to homepage or go back to previous menu.

For those with touch screen:
[Previous][EXIT][Shuffle][PageDown][Next] <---You can't see these but they are at the top of the screen in this order.

For iPad and iPhone:
New keys will show up. Whole site is touch screen compatible even though it wasn't meant to be.

Here is my favorite deck: Learning the colors in different languages.

Have fun. I don't want to sound like I am advertising the site so I'll leave out the features.

It's mainly those busy backgrounds and text with solid background that doesn't match the background that hurt my eyes. That's how websites were designed it 1999: way too busy. Not a fan of the menu-driven navigation either (I would like an easy way to get back to the main page, for example, a website should not need a manual), but I guess that's a matter of taste. If you care about search engine ratings, getting important key words as part of the URL is important, instead of the 'random' id (eg. www.example.com/flash/2-input-gates).

If you're happy with the way it is and only want positive feedback, that's a valid choice. Just let me know.

Alm, I love your criticism, since I don't have an eye for beautiful webpages. So that, I've been separating the design and code aspect of my pages hoping in the future I could hire a team of people to work on it ;D For now, I am just getting the ball rolling in just implementing the idea. The rest will be up to them.

As for the pages I've been posting. I don't see it as part of the website, but as users' flashcards. User will be allow to make the flashcard online or upload a text file and it'll be run. Normally, their flashcard will start as a small, basic text with solid background, no coding required. Once they get better, they can start experimenting with simple commands like [[[color("blue","pink",60)]]].

Kiriakos-GR, Big?? No way. This flashcard use the code: [[[color("pink","-",350)]]] <--font size=350!!!
[Hiragana] www.flipqa.com/flash.php?f=[1]539c1bb91272f143cbfbeb8b7b861806

It was a designed decision to destroyed the URL. I have decided to allow the site to take on foreign flashcards like ?????.txt instead of banning it. Normally, php would choke on something like this. I am betting the quality of the site will be spread by mouth over SEO.

[?????.txt] www.flipqa.com/flash.php?f=[1]595752af45d413c7d00c8be599ee52c0 (I've made a test page. Just press the space key)

Dave, I apologize if I appear to be linking to my site. The good new is that smf can't read my site address and I had to use a technique to make it look like a link to the readers. The search engines probably don't see it as a link.

edit: It seemed like smf can't handle foreign character too well. Go to the front page and type in 'funny' in the box and that title should appear in big red.

edit2:
Alm, I think you were talking about the first flashcard, right? Yeah, you're right. That was one of my most ambitious flashcard project. I made that flashcard and gave up since it was getting too convoluted for me to think straight. The other one, [R Color Code] uses just over 2K lines of codes, cut and paste. I nearly went blind making that. Most user's flashcards will be quite simple and nothing fancy. Those were some horrible learning lessons. Now, I think about it, I shouldn't have posted that one, it'll scare people away and give them the wrong impression. Most flashcards is like this:
Line 1>ans1
Line 2>ans2
Line 3>ans3
Line 4>ans4a or ans4b <--more than one answer
Line 5 [["right answer"]][["wrong answer"]][["wrong answer"]]> <--multiple choice

Man, I shouldn't have posted the first one.

Alm, I implemented what you said about navigation and am ecstatic. I no longer have to explain to visitors how to use the flashcard. I am also in the process of untangling the URLs as you said. I must admit, it was one ugly URL and didn't like it myself :o

You don't know how grateful I am. Thank you so much.

Ahh, my site seemed dead. I guess, I am not into maintaining a site for people to use. I have no power for that. Too stressful! I put in the front page, "disable for maintenance" and felt so much relief. I am gonna leave it like that so I can enjoy my freedom. ;D

Also, taking it off the local server of my netbook and placing it on a real hosting server is a good experience that I recommend to anyone. Thanks everyone for reading this thread. I guess EE and E Hobbyist love to show to people their projects.

So I'll end it with this webcam shot:
