High voltage safety training video from power company
« on: January 04, 2021, 11:38:10 pm »

Well done video on power line safety.

One I had not thought of was someone hooking up a generator wrong and back feeding the lines.

Thanks - that is a good presentation.  I was impressed by how long the arcs were.  Seems like the conductors had to be almost touching for the arc to start, but it stretched out really far when breaking the connection.

BTW, Dominion Virginia Power's preferred distribution voltage is now 19.9 kV (phase to ground) versus the 7,200 volts they used in the demo!

Well yeah. Initially, the arc has to overcome the breakdown voltage of the air (which is quite high, as air is a relatively good insulator). But once it does, it creates an arc of plasma, which is much more conductive.
