I am teaching two neighbor kids about how a 3D printer works and I thought I'd set up a demo of a how a simple DC motor moves as compared to how a stepper motor moves. Maxim heard the noises and was fascinated with them - especially the stepper motor.

It makes noise and it moves, both recipes for provoking an attack.   :)

I know you were making a joke and as much as I hate cats myself, I fail to see how posting a picture of a dead cat can be anything other than upsetting or disturbing, particularly for those who might have had a cat similar to the one in the photo.

It's not appropriate.

The Minx diaries.

Granddad visited today and why he was out and about I have no idea as it's mid winter and cold and windy outside.
He found me in my window bed, not ideal as I try best to avoid him however today he offered up a fine ear scratch....both ears I may add which made me yield and return him a purr.

Nuthing much happening here other than trying to keep warm and tormenting my dog Fly of which a good chasing warms one up very nicely.  :)
Cleaned up nearly all the mice around here and a good few rabbits too except the fully grown ones that are a bit hard to catch.
Anyways, later dudes and keep practicing on training them humans.

I know you were making a joke ....
Now everyone will come up with a terrible picture in mind, although the photo itself was innocent. Even if you love cats, it is impossible to have a cat nearby when working with electronics, even for safety reasons for the cat itself. I hope the joke didn't upset anyone.

Impossible. You will understand this when your work requires a microscope.

You posted a picture of a deceased animal by the roadside in a thread clearly full of cat lovers, and those with cats as part of their family. Was it the stupid part of your brain that thought that was OK, or the cruel part? You're now trying to side-step and distance yourself from the original issue.

For some reason it seems to me that you have not neutered your cats. You probably have so few problems that you have to create them on purpose in order to enjoy solving them.

A stepper motor, a small controller, and a fuzzy enclosure = cat toy! Hey this gives me ideas ... I can rule the cat toy world!  :-DD
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

We only do that when we don't want/need them to breed.

Our cats are fully trained.

They sit on command for treats and food.

They know who's boss and where they can and can't be.

They sometimes break the rules and get told off, but you can't negatively reinforced cat behaviour, so there is no point in shouting at a cat or anything like that, just move them away from the problem and don't reward them with any contact for a bit.

You are lucky. I had a cat who peed all over, and I pricked my finger with something pissed on and treated it for a long time.

This is one of the many reasons dogs are inherently better than cats.

Yes, I always find a common language with dogs. I have a neutral attitude towards cats, but for some reason they love me, according to their owners.

Can you tell the story about that photo? I'm not familiar with this particular cat.
First thought I had was: "Oh, a John-Lennon-Memorial-cat."

Thanks.

I'm puzzled...

I thought his original 'you can't train a cat' thing was something of a joke, and since you posted essentially the same thing I would have thought you'd be laughing. Instead, you now think you're the boss and your cats mere servants to your whims (you can snip their balls if and when you like, regardless of their wish, command them to move, etc).

Do your cats become boss or serf depending on who you want an argument with?

A photo was posted, whilst not graphic, was still in bad taste (in my opinion). It came under notice after being flagged by members of the forum. We usually let most things slide, and as much as I hate cats, I respect those who love them and will always uphold their right to post as many cat photos as they want to enjoy among themselves.

Time and place kind of thing.

Training cats...

It obviously depends upon the cat (some dogs are harder to train than others, no difference to cats), but my experience...

You have to train them when they are young.  Pretty much from being a kitten.  I think it's very hard, possibly impossible, to change a cat's behaviour as an adult unless you have that framework in early on.

Cats are strongly food motivated.  So training them around a reward mechanism seems to work the best.  You can't really train them like dogs where they want to satisfy the owner.  There is no point at all in training a cat negatively (same for dogs), they do not respond well to it, so for instance if they do something wrong like scratching the carpet, don't shout at them, just remove them from the situation and give them something else to do.

Cats are more equal with humans in the hierarchy.  If you treat them well they will treat you well back.  Dogs seem to be more unconditional in their love.  I'm thinking that if you were homeless and didn't have enough food the dog stays by your side, the cat leaves  ::)!

Both our cats can 'beg' for food, respond to their name (return home), walk on a leash, one of ours can even 'high-five' you on command.   Both know the sound of the 'laser toy' (my laser distance measure) down to the button press to turn it on.  They don't scratch carpets or furniture - only their scratching posts.

Dogs are obviously infinitely more trainable but they are completely different creatures requiring daily stimulation and exercise.  I quite like that our cats can get all of their stimulation from going outdoors every day.  Though I know opinions differ on indoor vs outdoor cats.
