POLL: New Server Speed
« on: March 08, 2013, 09:45:26 am »
As you should know, the eevblog server has been upgraded to a faster processor, 64bit, faster hard drive, and thanks to gnif who has worked tirelessly through the night eating pizza and Jolt cola, some super penguin speed and stability tweaks.
Waddya think?

my connection bandwidth probably does not do it justice, pages load at the same speed, but begin loading instantly, as opposed to a 1 to half second delay,

for some small tweaks to get even faster page loads, i notice those share images down the bottom are 32x32 images re-sized down to 29x29, you could cut some size away by cropping them down, though its not much, a larger contributor is the laughing gif, its 30KB by far the largest image on the page,

I've attached a shrunken copy of your avatar pic, for reference to show they can be shrunken, and i only went lightly on the averaging ,

It is faster, it was worth the downtime! Got a little problem with it at home. At work had to flush dns cache and it works fine. At home I can get to the forums (www.eevblog.com/forum) but www.eevblog.com takes me to "Default Web Page" (screenshot below) - strange behavior.

If you have a router, it might have its own cache that needs clearing.

Having said that, I certainly haven't gotten any errors since the upgrade, and speed does seem improved... but I'm a skeptic, so I'll need a little longer before I say "this is better".  :P

If you are using FireFox, try clearing all the history, that helped me.

I've checked my tablet and it cleared my router, than I tried Chrome on my computer and it works ok. The only suspect now is Firefox.

So the server connection error messages are finally gone?

Dave.

Have not ( touch wood) had any today, and the site is noticeably faster as well.  Saw issues in the upgrade, but those were already noted.

Overall a big Thumbs Up! to Dave and Gnif for doing this fine work.

As far as my problem goes, yes! Once it was narrowed down to Firefox I've cleared things one by one and clearing cache fixed the problem. I don't think error messages are caused by the server, if anyone experiences them they most likely problems on their side.

Since the fluke cnx3000 contest announcement was made by Dave few hours ago, I can see this forum is already very crowded , lets watch and see until the contest ended whether it survived the beating.

Perfect time and opportunity to gather load details analysis at the server log.

Fast enough for me :P I honestly don't pay too much attention as long as the page loads in a reasonable amount of time, and usually the problem exists at my end.

It's hard to notice an improvement as the speed was never bad for me.  I am sure the upgrade will pay off as you get more and more workload on it.

The same here. I never had speed issues with the site but it seems to be a bit faster.

It was good enough for me before the upgrade but I guess it never hurts to have new hardware for reliability, hope the extra grunt will help with those sudden spikes cause by any of your future work.
