I found this US NIST publication to be pretty good: From Sundials to Atomic Clocks - Understanding Time and Frequency

What else have you found that we all ought to know?

Here's a good one: why tantalum capacitors go bang, and how we might dissuade them from doing so:

The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments

A wonderful chemistry book with such highlights as "Chlorine from Hydrochloric Acid" and "Hold a 2-inch piece of magnesium ribbon with a pair of pliers.  Ignite it." It even contains instructions on how to ferment and distil your own ethanol.

Quite informative, but be careful which ones you do in your own home.

Of course, in someone else's home, go for it!

The tantalum pdf looks interesting.
