OT:I need a movie
« on: July 07, 2013, 05:49:13 am »
It's summer and I'm off school.  Parts are going to arrive in a week so I can finish the $%@#$%# 7400 logic project that I started.  In the mean time I'm going to watch movies  ^-^.

Dave introduced me to Wargames, and I have watched it and loved it.  I even watched the sequel.  So now with this post I'm coming back for more  :-+.  Please post your favorite movies and I will watch the ones that I have never seen before.  Thank you!

Given that you've watched WarGames, it's now obligatory that you watch others in the same genre.
Sneakers is a must, as is Pirates of Silicon Valley.
Anti-trust, The Net, and Hackers are reasonable time killers.
And of course the almost real-life war games, Thirteen Days.

Then personally I'd go on an adventure heist movie marathon...

Of course this is all a given that you have watched the BTTF trilogy, Indy and Die Hard Tetralogies, and The Matrix.

Castaway on the Moon is a really great movie. It is Korean and subtitled but believe me you don't need to read it. The acting is phenomenal and story is brilliant.

If you love sci-fi about outer space aliens, my additions for above excellent list.

These alien movies are a bit different than ordinary alien movies which usually with physical form, these are more like a new concept about alien or foreign intelligent things that could do beyond human capability to normally comprehend or cope with them.

- Solaris , starring : George Clooney ..
- Sphere , starring : Dustin Hoffman ..

That was the Russian version of 2001 ? or a different version.

DUNE (sadly, nothing like the book, but still near the top)
Barbarella (nothing needs to be said :-) )

Nope, thats the newer Holywood version, same story line but with better special effect of course, yes, I've watched the original Russian version as well. Still recommending the Holywood version cause almost no change in the main concept and characters.

And nobody mentions 'The good, the bad and the ugly'  :wtf:. I wasn't born when it was made but I think its a very good movie. And how about 'For a few dollars more' and 'Once upon a time in New York' also made by Sergio Leone?

Several of my favorite movies:
- Nikita (the original in French from 1990)
- Chaplin (the biographic movie from 1992)
- Love actually
- Pulp fiction
- RocknRolla
- Snitch
- Lock stock and 2 barrels
- The social network
- The Darwin awards (must see)
- The curious case of Benjamin Button (skip the last 30 minutes)
- The ninth gate
- Constantine
- Tomorrow when the war began
- Yes man save the world
- Plunkett & Macleane
- 2012
- Avatar
- Underworld
- The bourne trilogy
- Inception
- Mesrine Killer instinct & Mesrine Public enemy no1

Usually the movies directed by Clint Eastwood are pretty good. Its amazing how he can use the same character (himself) in so many different movies and situations ;D

There are many other good series too:
- Breaking bad
- Dexter
- Long way round
- Long way down

edit: I totally forgot 'Trainspotting' and 'This is England'

Every now and then I look for movies and series with a high rating on IMDB.com. There are many relatively unknown movies well worth watching.

Ah! I can see several Seventh Art recommendations! Well, I would unreservedly recommend anyone to watch the trilogy The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009), The Girl Who Played with Fire (2009) and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (2009); but I am talking only about the original Swedish films and NOT their lousy Hollywood remakes for mainstream consumption...

Your next mission, should you choose to accept it, will be to watch the Dogtooth (2009) (original name: ?????????? in Greek or "Kynodontas" in Latin characters), which though it is not the most easy movie to watch, it is absolutely a resourceful and honest film. It was a surprise to me because by just watching it you end up living it, even though it is not about your life. What I can only say is that the scenario itself is more than enough for the movie to even need any kind of background brass or stringed musical instruments to drive your emotions to the target levels; this happens naturally by the powerful screenplay and the vivid acting only! No CGI, no viewer conditioning music, not anything --but only a strong, intoxicating and resourceful conception that leaves the spectator with absolutely no answers* in the end. I hope you will enjoy that rare movie as much as I did!

-George

P.S. Since I do not know whether Dogtooth is available in your place for rental or not, feel free to search for it at the torrents world; In this case, I will provide you with the English subtitles file (in .SRT format), attached below. Before using it, please remove the .TXT extension from the file attached.

(*) Question: How many movie titles are you aware of, that were really meant to sharpen your critical thinking? Almost every movie title available, goes through the same pattern: Introducing the problem and serving the solution -either directly or indirectly: Bed time stories for little children... In the long term, you are actually being programmed not to search for the answers, but to wait for them to be served to you. You will need to try really hard to find a title that leaves the spectator (or the reader) with no answers provided, in order to start him thinking.
Hi! This is George; and I am three and a half years old!
(This was one of my latest realisations, now in my early fifties!...)
