This far down and still no mention of these classics:

 - Airplane

I used to have this scene memorized.

The Thirteenth Floor

Wow the only other person I've ever heard of that had seen that movie.

It came out around the time the Matrix was out and had some similarities, but ended up being more of a thriller.

Ok well I've seen many of my favorites already. I'm a general fan of submarine warfare movies so I'm glad to see U-571 and K-19 got mentioned.

Another 80s classic I'd say is Short Circuit. As a kid I used to repeatedly watch the opening scene.

Anyone able to figure out what model scope was used?

Anyway back tho the list.
Anything that includes Anthony Hopkins is always a good movie:

Freejack - Starring Emilio Estevez, Renee Russo, Mick Jagger, and Anthony Hopkins. (Come on Mick Jagger as the bad guy? You've gotta see that!)
All the Hannibal Lechter movies (Silence of the Lambs / Hannibal / Red Dragon / Hannibal Rising)
Hearts in Atlantis - A Stephen King movie but not the typical thriller, still a really good movie.
Meet Joe Black (A modern interpretation of Death takes a Holiday)
(and other Anthony Hopkins Movies)

Sean Connery:
The Hunt for Red October (my favorite of all time)
Medicine Man
James Bond (just see the whole series)
(And most other Sean Connery movies)

Morgan Freeman:
Bruce Almighty / Evan Almighty - These are just fun movies
Shawshank Redemption
Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider : Morgan Freeman plays the same character in both
(And again most others)

Random movies:
O Brother Where Art Thou?
The Mexican
The Jack Ryan trillogies (Sum of All Fears had Ben Affleck instead of Harrison Ford, but it did have Morgan Freeman)
Wall-E

I'll update this list later as I look through my DVD collection...

Or Dr. Strangelove. Oh oh oh, Revolver is always fun for an easy going mindfsck. Round of with Aliens and Blade Runner and you are good to go. :) Oh and Snatch.

Ok had to share this... Someone did a compilation of Ben from Short Circuit. Ben is played by Fisher Stevens who played the bad guy in Hackers.

So many great movie titles, and yet no one mentioned the classic must see "Once upon a time in the west"

Das Boot is one of the best submarine movies (in my list).
I can always watch "We Dive at Dawn" every time it pops up on TV, a wartime submarine film, 1943, so has a wartime feel to it.

I'll confine myself to ten favourites. Not necessarily in order.

1. Blade Runner (make sure it is Directors Cut)
2. Pulp Fiction
3. The Andromeda Strain (1971). This is a great pre cgi SciFi story by Michael Crichton
4. 2001
5. Blues Brothers
6. Silent Running
7. Moon  (this is excellent by any standard)
8. Alien
9. Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy
10. Source Code (also excellent)

I could go on but decided to stick mostly with SciFi.

I just picked up the five disk release of Blade Runner, and there are two versions of the director's cut:

1992 'Director's Cut' by Michael Arick
2007 'Final Cut' by Ridley Scott

Of the known versions, I'm pretty sure I've seen the US theatrical release, and the 'International Cut' which came out on Criterion Edition LD.

I'm looking forward to identifying the differences in the versions.

Also, since you have Alien on the list, you have to include Aliens as well. (Forget the others, there should only have been those two...)

I caught the ending once when i was out somewhere and it just looked stupid.
(No offense intended to those who love it)

Have you seen Eagle vs Shark (2007), New Zealand?
I can't believe I watched that film twice (thanks to TVO Saturday Night at the Movies)

stupid the whole way through, but dorky funny (you'd be offended if I didn't call that movie stupid)

The Piano (1993), New Zealand is quite a good film

Quote from: BravoV
   - Solaris , starring : George Clooney ..
That was the Russian version of 2001 ? or a different version.

Nope, thats the newer Holywood version, same story line but with better special effect of course, yes, I've watched the original Russian version as well. Still recommending the Holywood version cause almost no change in the main concept and characters.

No offence, but was that that hookey nonsense with Clooney’s dead wife recurringly coming back to life in outer space? That was my last straw with Soderberg (or whatever his name is); another trite mystical bore ineffectively given depth with endless boring and protracted takes of Clooney staring silently and vacantly into space.  :P

Can't believe The Castle wasn't on page one, given that this is an Aussie forum!
It's my all time favourite film, after a lengthy tussle between it and 'Planes Trains And Automobiles'.
And after watching the Castle, it's logical to watch The Dish, from the same creators and almost as good.

About disaster movies... if you want to know how many ways there are to die during diving you should watch Sanctum.
