ICOM IC-7000 Letting The Smoke/Flames Out! (Old Video)
« on: November 23, 2014, 08:05:29 pm »
This happened to me a few years ago while on the ramp in Oakland, CA!

This Icom IC-7000 was installed on in a Commander 114 I was bound to Australia. As Procedure I always contact San Francisco Airinc on HF on the ground and Video or Audio record the response from them CMA in case of lost coms!

Commander 114 Photo.

When I seen the smoke and flames I killed the main power! The Hookup was to a 24V to 12V 20A Astron Converter, SGC-237 Coupler with Better RF Tune Control and Long Wire Antenna! Ham Radio Outlet was just down the road grabbed the crew car went and got a new one and continued the trip to the Gold Coast!

I was thankful that ICOM Replaced this radio with a new one after about a year wait! But would have been a big repair! The replacement has had its 3 trans pacific trips and now has been retired to the ham shack! Icom said that the radio Self-Oscillated still unknown reason they would not tell me.

At least you were still on terra firma, and not over a vast expanse of ocean, and were able to shutdown quickly and safely.

Time for analysis is definitely not on your side in those situations, particularly after takeoff.

I guess that's a good reason why they use PTFE wiring in certified panel mounted kit.

Sorry about the blurry first photo's found the SD card with the good ones!

The wiring I use is aircraft grade tefzel (Teflon). Yea, glad I was on the ground but I could have shut it down regardless I have the radios in portable kits and there is a heavy duty toggle for power in reach at all times. With 160 gallons of 100LL in the cabin not a place for flames!

Unfortunately the UK amateur licence doesn't allow operation from aircraft. In addition, I would doubt that the permanent fitting of non-ETSO authorised kit in the panel is allowed on EASA aircraft. We get away with that by running spaghetti wiring from the lighter outlet and several suction mounts. Typically I run a Garmin 495 and an iPad this way.

Of course, I could always get a US callsign and re-register the plane as an N-reg...

We do the temp installs for Ferry Flights (Special Flight Permit & Special Airworthiness Certificate) under a FAA Field Approval.
