500MHz 2G/s scope for cheap?
« on: May 22, 2021, 07:59:59 pm »
So ive been browsing ebay... AGAIN. And i found this really interesting scope. They dont say its broken or anything but its really cheap. And for a TDS620 500MHz 2G/s scope thats really strange. The current bid is not $99.95. Is it worth it? https://www.ebay.com/itm/254984896122?hash=item3b5e48be7a:g:ihIAAOSw6z1gpS8m

You better skip the TDS600 series. Short memory an no peak detect. Better look for a good deal on the TDS500 or TDS700 series. The particular one from the listing is showing a copyright notice from before 1995 which means it almost certainly has leaking electrolytic capacitors which need to be replaced. The good thing is that the leaking capacitors have not caused a failure in the power-on diagnostics. If there are more than 2 power-up diagnostics failures on a TDS500/600/700 series it means the leakage has caused serious damage and chances are high you'll be looking at a lengthy repair job.

There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.
