Old Television Commercials
« on: January 18, 2016, 07:23:05 am »
For some random reason today, I started thinking of the old Australian Cherry Ripe commercial theme tune. Anyone born mid-1980's or earlier would remember this.

Not happy Jan has to be included in the line up.

And I bought another Toyota Hilux after this one.

OK - here's my bid...

bigcrazy.net/VTC1984Showreel.mp4

The worst corporate demo for a video facility of all time (and yes, I'm in there)   None of the people that made the content approved the demo tape - but management were trying to sell 'something' that none of us wanted to make!

I can't remember which editor made this but it stinks on all levels!  The worst thing they could have done was use a 'professional' presenter - talking abut things he had no idea!

But we did make a lot of great content over the years - that didn't show in this reel!     Check out the clothes in the credits!

Don't ask a question if you aren't willing to listen to the answer.

In 1965, I set out to make my career  in Commercial TV (at STW9),in the days of Image Orthicons & the like.
After 6 months ,I "was let go",& joined the PMG's Dept (later Telecom Aust), working mainly at TV & MF Broadcast Transmitter sites.

In 1988,I went to TVW7---needless to say a lot had changed!

The first month I was there,Management had us all stand out at the back of the Studio, whilst the "chopper" flew over & filmed us.
A nice warm, fuzzy "our staff loves to work at 7" promo.
Strangely, that promo never went to air!

From time to time,Production would see some beaut special effect & Engineering would be asked to reproduce it.
They usually did .
"Stuck together with chewing gum & Gaffer tape"---but it worked.

On one occasion they wanted to fade between a scene projected onto the angled top of a white grand piano to the same scene live.

One of the young blokes spent a hour or so up a ladder, tweaking the "keystone" controls of a dirty big 3 tube Sony  video projector hung from the lighting grid to make the pix geometry halfway correct.
I then spent the next few hours setting it back to normal.

All for about a fifteen second interlude!

They made some good stuff,though,
Once, a couple of bricklayers built a complete "Red Rooster" shop in Studio 1--- great commercial!

In1990,I went out on an OB at the Golf,& in an emergency, someone was needed to operate a CCU.

The Director said:-

 "You did this at CH9!"

Me:-"Sure, a few times,25 years ago!"
I really sweated blood that day!

OK, I'm laughing out loud at the Hilux one. Though not called the Hilux in the US, they are quite popular here for their durability. Friend of mine has an '87, took it to a job interview at a company mostly populated by former Marines who saw them used throughout the Mideast, and no less than 3 of them offered him cash money to sell the thing to them. Would have been a long walk back home...

I'm not an apple fan boy,  probably more the opposite, but their adverts were always strange. I'd call them magalomaniac...

Especially the one with the tank and the 1984 one:

"A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible. There are no prima donnas in engineering." - Freeman Dyson

And it's funny that the outcome is pretty much representative of 1984 or Brazil or The Wall :)
