Why only SMD resistors have marking, but not ceramic capacitors and small inductors?
Resistors are easy to measure with high precision while small capacitors and inductor are not.

I have often wondered this myself.

Cost of the ink and the printer. in most cases the parts are supplied on a reel and used from that. Marking will double the cost for no benefit to the manufacturer or the assembly house. Even resistors are going to being unmarked as well, though there it is not much extra to add the mark as you are already printing a layer of ink on them as protection for the film so the lettering is basically free.

Indeed, there's a place for hobbyist-for-hobbyist business: measure, mark and repack a reel of SMD parts as a service product.

I can see a use for SMT resistors being different colours. that way you can have a transparent case with a little pizzaz inside.
