Outboard preamp/prescaler for counters?
« on: December 15, 2011, 06:30:58 pm »
Has anyone seen an outboard preamp and prescaler for counters? I'm particularly looking for something in the 200MHz-1.5GHz+ range for my 5335A. I guess I could build a simple 10:1 out of an MC12080 but I was wondering if their was anything commercial with a good amp/buffer in place.

Tektronix made some prescaler modules for use with counters although I don't know if they are common on ebay or not. It scales the signal down by 16. Maybe you can use the scale (multiply) function of the 5335A to scale the frequency appropriately so you can read the display directly. Or use it like it's supposed to be used.

This one might also be worth reading:

One can never have enough oscilloscopes.

Much appreciated! That Tek unit fits the bill, if I can find one. Otherwise, I'll build.
