Hello!

I'm Conner, i am very passionate about electrical engineering, Linux kernel development, network architecture, server development and system administration. I am 16, and currently attending no school for any of this! i am entirely self taught, which explains why none of my electronics projects works   |O

If you're into mediocre electronics, do talk to me. I can teach you the basics... And more basics! Good luck with your linear power supply!

Nice to meet you mttee2!

Hi,my name's Nathan, been in to electronics for the past couple of years on and off due to my full time job as a mechanic, would like to make my own controllers for solar energy harvesting and what not, recently I have been working with the simple 555 timers and 4017 decade counter, in the future I would like to also automate my shed with keypads and so forth

Hope to learn a lot more from this community

So there is a place to introduce ourselves, I should have searched harder.

I'm Sylvain, my 1st language is French so please don't be afraid to correct my English, I won't get better otherwise.

I started in electronic in my early teens and even went to CEGEP (Quebec College) to become an Electronic Technician, unfortunately I was not very studious and the first two years was stuff I already knew so I got good grades without working for them. I hit a brick wall in my third year and flunked out. At abut that time I became interested in computers and it looked like a cheaper hobby as their were no parts to buy to start a new project.

Despite this I've worked most of my life in the electronic industry on the production floor where I worked in almost all positions from assembler to test technician to procedure writers to quality control etc...
As i got older I started getting tired of a repeating pattern in my life: Start working for a small company that closed because it could not grow or did grow but then got bought out by a bigger company that eventualy closed our branch. So I went into I.T. I worked for one of the biggest I.T. company in the world, had a nice salary and a stable job, unfortunately health problems that had started before but could be worked around got a lot worst and I had to quit after only a few years.

Now I'm 51 on disability benefits.  On the plus side no more alarm clock waking me in the morning (unless I have a doctor appointment) and on the minus side my income has been radically reduced but it is adequate for my lifestyle.

I now have a lot of free time so I restarted my electronic hobby. I kept most of my electronic stuff and even got more while I had the mean (like my oscilloscope) as I knew I wanted to get back to the hobby eventually. I was also allowed to get some stuff (like my Fluke 87) from companies I worked for that closed or moved.

Right now I'm making sure I still know the basics (including the math), what I have forgotten I am relearning. It does not stop me having fun with an arduino or having a couple of simple projects in mind for the near future: an alarm clock, and a small fixed time kitchen timer (about 70cm high by 30 cm diameter) that will get activated by turning it over like an hour-glass. I plan on building several of the timers with a different time in each in accord with my most common kitchen needs.

Hi,

I'm a returning gamer :) I was hardcore gamer in my young times, now that my two children are here, i'm about to play again.

But i also do a lot of photography.

I just bought a good computer for both purpose, still lacking the graphic card...
My uncomplete computer: Mobo Asus Z170-A / CPU i7 6700K 4Ghz / RAM 16GB / SSD 500GB / Power 580W Gold / Cooler beQuiet PureRock

Hello everyone! After watching the EEVblog videos for some time now i noticed that there is a forum connected to those videos! yay! A forum full of other nerds like me, a dream comes true!
So I thought about introducing myself before posting "regular" posts, and thats what I'm gonna do now.

My name is Kai, I'm from germany and living in Frankfurt on Main.
I went to gymnasium, i guess in english its comparable to a high school, but didn't finish with a high school diploma (Abitur in german),
instead left the school after 12 years and started a job training as "Informationselektroniker für Geräte und Systemtechnik",
what would translate as something like an electronic technician specialised at devices and systems. In my oppinion this is a absolutely stupid thing to say,
so I would stick to the former name, which was just "electronic technician for radio and television".

I love electronics and I play around with that kind of stuff since I was ten years old (now im 25... time flies by..), motivated by my father who tought me nearly anything I know nowadays.
The job training worked out quite good, I finished it with a special award for the best grades on the apprenticeship diploma that year in whole germany.

Sadly my career didn't go on like that. I worked the next three years in three different companies for wages far below the average, always for a one year limited time.
When I got kicked out of my last job the same day my father died from a sudden heart attack at the age of 50, I fell into a really big hole which I couldn't leave completely behinde at all.
I lost the fun of playing around with electronics, lived my life, but didn't do anything that would carry me on.

I thought about how to go on, and after struggling with myself for a long time I decided to begin a study of elektronic engineering.
I hate studying, I'm more of a practical guy, so this will be tough for me. I have to face my problems because I want to leave all this behind and start again with my life, start again with my once so beloved hobbys, try to learn to "have fun again".

Besides that electronic thing I have some other hobbys, like working on and driving around with cars and bikes (I own an vintage mercedes firefighter truck, yay!), kerosene- and gas lamps, writing reports into my blog (link in signature if you want to have a look), trying to publish something on youtube but stop it at the last second over and over again, working with electron tubes and so on, which need some time too. So I hope to take my time again for myself, start again and get back to what I have been before. Daves videos, reading around here at the forums and looking around here insires me and gives me new energy, so I have to say a big thanks to everyone around here and hope to read from you guys in the next time!
Greetings, Kai \ Ysjoelfir

Hello all,

New here, I live in Eindhoven in The Netherlands (aka Holland). The city where Philips was founded and where quite a few interesting things were invented.  ASML (photolithography systems for the semiconductor industry) and DAF Trucks being the other important manufacturers over here which obviously have attracted a lot of supplying companies, one of which I work for.

My work is in industrial electronics and my main responsibility is testing, repairing and calibrating of new products. My specialization is in instruments used (mainly) by researchers for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Mostly analogue and never boring! All my practical experience, like soldering, reading schematics, fault finding, probing with scopes, etc. I learned in my job. I really do understand why Dave tells beginners that he hopes their projects fail. There's no better way of discovering how something works if you have to find out why it doesn't work. No doubt about it. And another tip I completely agree with: don't assume anything while you're doing it.

As a kid I was interested in how things work and obviously I took a lot of stuff apart. Electrical, mechanical, didn't really matter. Electricity was also intriguing to me and well, while finding out about it I received a few shocks and shrouded the house in darkness on more than one occasion ::) . Lighting always interested me and for a while I tinkered with classic cars.

I went to study EE but found out that I'm someone who likes to work with his hands, so I ended up doing what I do now and I still like it. But it seems technicians are a dying race. At 40 I'm still one of the youngest in the company I work for...

At home I play around with electronics from time to time. Little things, no big projects. Nowadays most of my free time goes to walking (hiking).

A while ago (months, a year?) I discovered the EEVblog and suffice to say that by now I watched most episodes. But it wasn't until today that I decided to join this forum. I'm on other forums as well, and for some reason the name "jitter" never seems to be taken when I register...

See you around!

Hello everyone. My name is Thony, My nationality is Cambodian but i am living in Australia studying electronics and computer engineering. I am in the second year at the moment. Really new to this blog, been sign up for a while but never been able to use it. I really want to buy an Oscilloscope and trying to get one that doesn't have that Auto button, I usually go to my university lab and if i use oscilloscope, i keep spamming the auto button. really want to have my very own oscilloscope just to build stuff like a microcontroller or an amplifier. Anyone recommend what scope should i buy, i wanna buy analog scope and a second hand one would be good. Thank you!
I like the smell of electronics.

Hello,
Just a friendly hello and a thank you to all that post on this forum.
I've been a lurker here for awhile and decided to get legal.  :-)
I'm an old avionics guy.  I've worked the bench and messed around in my small shop.
Been building computers for a long time.  I still have my Micronta microprocessor trainer and my Heathkit 3600 and 3700 breadboarders.
Started on TRS-80 Model 1's with 4k of memory in Basic.  Later graduated to the 16k model.  (Quote: How in the hell are we ever going to use THAT much memory?).  I like playing around with Arduino's, RC aircraft, CNC, and Photography/Cinematography.

Hi, I am an electronics engineer in the UK, with a mostly analogue electronics background. Found this forum looking for some information and decided to join. I am not sure how much I will contribute here but electronics is my life and passion for last 40+ years and perhaps my experience may be useful yet  :) .

Cheers

Alex

Hello all!

I've been lurking like crazy, and have been watching Dave's videos for little over 3 years now. Got a bit turned off by a few of his rants... until I learned first hand why he was ranting as such.

I grew up in a machine/fab shop. started going to school for Mech. E. But switched over to E.E. after taking the overlap classes. Went down the path of embedded. Always held an engineering internship/job job through school,

Designed and spun a few boards for work, and for the last 2 years have been focusing on firmware and software. And, well, need to start playing with more hardware in my spare time!

While i can borrow a few work tools. I really need to pick up my own for some projects!

So i'll be picking your brains soon!

Hello, I'm Patrick. I'm from Missouri, USA. I went through about two years of training in the Navy, and then worked on nuclear instrumentation and control equipment on an aircraft carrier for four years. I've been working at a company that remanufactures electronics for agricultural vehicles for the past two years. Slowly working towards some kind of degree, not sure what yet. Original plan was EE, but might just cut it short and get a technical degree.

Hi all, been watching the YouTube videos for a while... and do like to have a tinker with stuff every now and then (unable to go full time because of my day job...) I don't purposely troll or make crap comments so yeah... (love that rule) the best my 'workspace has at the moment is a fairly basic hand-held multi meter, a soldering Iron and a few screw drivers... I am getting into the 'coding (probably more python than anything else)' related stuff as I would like to be able to control my room via my smart phone and don't want a stock fix from the shop...

Hello, I'm Alexander from Bulgaria, 24 years old.

I currently work in the film industry as a special effects technician. It goes from explosions to guns to weather effects and so on.. and it's always diverse. This is the top reason I like my job. During my spare time, I enjoy practicing many hobbies, as DIY high-end audio - building my audio system always to the top ; woodworking, metal working, electronics, bicycling, reading and enjoying building stuff. I have my small workshop and I never stop upgrading it with tools, while I do the same with myself as it goes to knowledge.

I will be glad to learn and probably teach things in this community!

Regards,
Alexander.

G'day from sunny Queensland!

I have been an electronics hobbyist on and off for years. I spent many years working in theatre as a mechanist, audio operator and occasional lighting guy. I am now working as a full time web developer as it pays better and the hours are sane.

Having a physics degree and post grad studies in computer engineering have not kept me from blowing things up in my workshop and I have learned a lot from Dave's videos and this forum. I hope to contribute much more in the future.

Hey all! Michael here and I hail from New York State, USA. I've been an electronics hobbyist since a teenager in the 1960's but more or less inactive for the past 15 years or so. But now that I'm semi-retired and having a Tek 2465 Scope recently show up at my doorstep that has persuaded me to jump back in feet first. I found this forum after joining the TEK Yahoo group to get some advise on getting the 2465 repaired.

Many many years ago Heathkit and I were on a first name basis. Sadly most of that equipment is long gone and I regret getting rid of it. Since I started in electronics in the mid 1960's vacuum tubes (Valves) were king in many devices and they are still my first "love". Nothing like the warm glow of the filament. Unfortunately that's a dying art.

I'm glad to be here and I hope I can contribute.

Hello everyone, I'm an enthusiast of all things electrical and scientific.  I've never even had any formal education in any of the fields I'm interested in, yet I have always taught myself where such things are concerned.  This self-education has lead me into the collage level area on some subjects, despite my lack of even a high school diploma or equivalent due to complication from homeschooling (and other factors).

I am currently attempting to acquire a better set of test gear and to start on some new and potentially interesting projects.  However, I may be a bit held back by a lack of finances, as I still have yet to be able to get a job in the tiny nothingtown I'm stuck in.  |O

I'm hoping to finally get a job, and possibly start my own YouTube channel sometime before this winter (USA, so northern hemisphere), and I certainly hope to be able to consult this community should I require help with anything, or if I have something of potential interest.  :-+
