250V power strip 120V use
« on: May 23, 2013, 05:27:16 am »
All,

I'm trying to get power to my test equipment, and would love to use a modular power strip. Is there any reason why I couldn't use this http://www.amazon.com/Conntek-55705-Housing-Receptacles-Computer/dp/B001IZ199M/ with 120V? The only thing I would think is an issue is the protection would trip at half the wattage.

Thoughts?

There is no reason you cannot use this in the US, except it might not meet US electrical standards. If it has any over voltage protection then it still would protect most equipment. The circuit breaker does not work on watts, it works on amps regardless of the voltage.

sure, I know it works on amps... but that means at 250V, it would trip at 2500W, where at 125V (making it easy for the math), it would trip at 1250W. Shouldn't really matter anyway. The DS1052e draws like 50W, my FG draws at most 35W, and my PSU draws 60W... so no real chance of coming close to tripping.

Okay, cool. Think I'll pick up one of these then. Wish there were more options for modular power strips. =)

Thanks!

You could also look for some 19" types used for racks in data centers.

yup.... just wanted something "small". not sure what I'll do at this point really. I just don't have the space for a REAL lab setup.

For smaller stuff check out the 10" (yes, ten) rack mount power strips.
