Best digital oscilloscope below $500 ?
« on: January 27, 2012, 10:49:40 am »
Hi all,

Looking to pick up an oscilloscope with up to date features for under $500. Let me know your suggestions. Would like a known reliable brand and model.

I am thinking Agilent, HP, Tektronix. Looking for best value choice.

Thanks !

If you have watched any of Daves blogs.. Rigol is what Dave recommends for a new digital scope..  Model ds1102E 100mhz 399.00 http://www.tequipment.net/RigolDS1102E.html
they also have 50mhz version for 349.00

This will be my next new scope other than ebay you aren't too likely to find any thing like tek, hp etc .. unless you know someone that is looking for some fast cash.. of course ebay is risky .. may end up paying 500 then have to spend 300 or more to fix.

Just my opinion what ever that is worth

Was looking at HP 54120A + test set. My best guess on value for $ based on the specs. But I need something portable.....

Like the Tektronix TDS5104 only I'm $12000 short.

Rigol ds1102E is on my radar I did watch the video blogs. Looks like a nice piece, but I would like to know what others on this forum are using.

This was posted on Slickdeals.net earlier today.  I have read that it is a good hobbyist scope.  $329.

Time marches on though. The Owon SDS7102T is looking rather tempting.

2 channels, 100MHz, 1GSPS,
Nice big 8 inch 800x600 LCD, 10 Mpoint records.

On Ebay at £320, which I reckon is below  $500.

I just went through the same decision. I considered the Rigol DS1102E, even ordered it but it was not in stock and I was placed on back order. While waiting I did some more research and changed my mind. I ended up buying an Instek GDS-1102A-U at Tequipment for $499. The Instek had better specs and the company has a good reputation. I liked the idea that it has more memory and can use the memory at a higher sample rate. This is my first DSO so I can't comment to much because anything would have been great for me but so far I am happy with it.
I had ordered the Rigol from Saelig and they told me it was on back order but offered the Owon at a discount if I would take that instead. They actually sent me a couple emails with lowered prices until I canceled my order. I started to feel like they were trying to unload the Owon. I watched some reviews on the Owon and didn't like some of the short comings pointed out.

In the end I went with ds1102e. I could have done the hack, but for $50 I let it slide. Feeling good about it so far,

Thanks everyone !

Rigol DS1052 is what I use. Excellent value for money, don't get anything else!

I wouldn't surprised if he was trying to offload the Owon scope.  I personally am not impressed with the Owon scopes.

We've sold lots of the Rigol DS 1102E's and have good feedback from all our customers on those scopes.

Enjoy your new toy :-) ( ie Rigol DS 1102E)
