Where do you store your stuff?!

Typical scenario, I have the "3rd bedroom" as a "workshop" and the garden contains a shed with well, shed stuff in it, it's not big but it's full of wood dust etc.
The workshop is just about to get a lick of paint and i've literally filled another bedroom with the contents, where the hell does everyone store their excess "stock" to?

I have identified some stuff I can get rid of and some things can go in the roof but still got a LOT to sort out, just wondered where everyone else stores their stuff to, I thought about renting space but seems a bit overkill?!

I store stuff anywhere I can find to store it, it's a constant struggle to get rid of stuff and then not regret it later when I end up needing it.

If you do decide to rent space, make sure you have a definitive timeline, say rent it for X number of weeks, long enough to get the project done and move everything back. Far too many people fall into the trap of renting storage space and then using it as a hoarding space that stuff goes into and never comes out, paying far more over time than any of the stuff is worth. I would bet that >70% of the stuff that goes into storage units never comes out until it is disposed of.

Yeah, I have some "long" ongoing projects    So i'd definitely end up wasting money on storage!

I had too much stuff I decided so I've taken to storing it on ebay recently 

I have bought back a couple of things I've sold for less than I sold them for as well! Winner winner chicken dinner

I live in one of the most poorly designed apartments I've ever seen, but it has the advantage of two walk in closets (~2x3 meter) in addition to two regular size and one extra large that's out on the balcony. They are all fairly well filled up. being single, I can get away with stuff like having a milling machine and drill press on the kitchen counter (both are mini size), storing spray paint in the kitchen cabinets and chemicals in the refrigerator.

Also live in an apartment and also single so no SWMBO hassles. Bench in living room but kept neat. Can be seen in the "Bench" thread. 2 walk-in closets in the bedroom. One for clothes, the other for stuff.

I have an underground bunker 
Used to use a Kennards storage shed before that.

I am envious of your bunker Dave!!  If only I could justify the cost to her indoors!! 

I literally look at what has come out and wonder not how it will go back in but how the hell it was in there in the first place!

I need an underground bunker, the area under my house is wasted space, but it's built on a slab so I can't just dig it out. I try to keep all of my stuff contained in my hobby room but the closet in the guest room is full of it too, and the side of the garage where I can't fit a car because of the workbench.

I'm lucky to be single so I have the whole house to myself.  It's a split level so only half basement, with rest being crawlspace.  So crawlspace makes great storage space and that's where most of my less used stuff goes.  I just shoved everything in there when I first moved in, still have stuff from my childhood even, every now and then when I go down there looking for something it's interesting the nostalgic stuff I find.   I eventually want to build full blown shelving units in there so I can organize stuff better though.  I put in sub floor and framed the walls, so all the stuff is in the middle in a pile now.  Once I insulate and drywall it then I'll build the shelves and start organizing.

I use Ikea 'Billy' bookcases and plastic tubs, and the built in closet full of shelves and plastic tubs, and wall mounted shelves on rails like at department stores with plastic tubs.

Hi all,

I don't use plastic tubs, you pull off the lid and have to put it somewhere while you rumage......so I use archive boxes, they seem to be the perfect size & height, have a place to write on, easily stackable, built-in grip hole for pulling off the shelf.......

When I was single it got out of hand and I accumulated way too much stuff. I'm actually glad I've got someone to nag me about keeping things clean. It's easy to accumulate so much stuff that there's no space to use it. When she moved in I went on a cleaning spree and gave away a lot of stuff to others who will hopefully use it more than I was.

Ahh, the big downside to the split level.  Only half a basement.  I'm with you.  When the weather warms up and I can get back out into the garage and excavate my table saw, I hope to find time this year to build some crawlspace-height wheeled rack thingies so I can more easily shuffle things in and out.  I've gotten some mover's dollies from Hazard Fraught Tools, but they tend to get tipsy when the wheels decide to point in the wrong directions, and it's no fun trying to move boat anchors that want to topple over using one while squatting down duck walking and trying not to bang your head on the floor joists just above it.
