It's officially hot today!
« on: November 23, 2014, 05:45:06 am »
Completely off-topic but today it reached over 42 degrees here, in Sydney, Australia (107.6 Fahrenheit for you American folk). My server rack is noisy as buggery trying to keep cool.

 :phew:

Where is "here"?
The forecast was for 42C today at Parramatta, and it felt that!
Although seems to have only hit 37.2C

Where is "here"?

Western Sydney. I think the maximum I measured was about 42.5 degrees. It's cooled right down now though, the Dell badge on my 1RU server has returned to a normal healthy blue glow ;-)

Although I guess I shouldn't complain, Richmond got to over 45 degrees.

I'm not sure which is worse? Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Brrrr. Better wear something extra or things might break off.

And you people and your Southern Hemisphere luxury problems. :P I'm wearing socks and it's still cold to touch the floor. Did I mention I hate central heating? Well, I hate central heating.

Mmmh, although to be fair I think I prefer the cold over 42 degrees Celsius. :o I think I'd melt in that heat.

At least, you're not buried in 2 meters of snow like in Buffalo.  :scared:
http://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/articles/dramatic-images-show-buffalo-disappearing-in-snow/40420/

Here it's 5°C or 41°F  (In Canada, we're bilingual; everybody speaks Celsius and Fahrenheit).   ;)

Here it is 26C, going into evening and humidity is 81%. No AC because you need power to run said AC........... And as Eishkom is doing load shedding AKA turn off those who possibly are using power for things for 2 hours in rotation so as to inconvenience maximally.

You live in such a climate without airco? Even I have one (because my office is in the attic)! Then again it gets very humid over here; the dry heat you probably have over there is much more bearable.

-3 deg Celsius here earlier.  And today we had the first snowfall that didn't melt away instantly.

It's officially cold today!  (Sort of.)

So it is in an urban heat island, with solid concrete on all sides....... Probably would have been a better site 800m east in those open fields by Vista Pavilion. Probably siting only gives a 3C high error in the records, and delays the minimum temperature to well after sunrise as well.

Yes, it's not the heat that bothers me so much as the humidity when we have a heatwave in the UK. I have a portable aircon that most often spends its time purely in fan mode, but it is worth every very expensive penny in electricity costs when the temps and the humidity are high so I can have a good nights sleep. I don't mind the noise of it cycling either.

Strangely there are a lot of swamp coolers sold alongside the air conditioners even in the UK. They will just make the humidity worse! A plain old fan is better.

If I lived somewhere with dry heat, like Arizona, then a swamp cooler would be my go-to device. Totally counterproductive in the UK though.

Of course that's the day we have to do lots of driving and discover the car a/c has developed a leak so it only blows hot air.

It was about 30°C and 83% RH at my place (just south of Brisbane) on Saturday.  No air-con at home either, but I do live about 800m from the water so that helps.  :)

I used to have such a portable aircon in my office but it was way too noisy and didn't cool that much (even with a dedicated exhaust through the roof). I managed to trade it in for a split unit which works much better. I solved the heat problem in our bedroom in a different way: a big tree in the front garden keeps the sun out.

Dry heat or humid doesn't matter-anything over 100 degrees F is EFFING HOT :-- :-- :-- :--  I have the air con in my office on even in the 70's.
