39 here in/near Canberra... one day I'll get aircon.
You live in such a climate without airco? Even I have one (because my office is in the attic)! Then again it gets very humid over here; the dry heat you probably have over there is much more bearable.
Yes, it's not the heat that bothers me so much as the humidity when we have a heatwave in the UK. I have a portable aircon that most often spends its time purely in fan mode, but it is worth every very expensive penny in electricity costs when the temps and the humidity are high so I can have a good nights sleep. I don't mind the noise of it cycling either.
Strangely there are a lot of swamp coolers sold alongside the air conditioners even in the UK. They will just make the humidity worse! A plain old fan is better.
If I lived somewhere with dry heat, like Arizona, then a swamp cooler would be my go-to device. Totally counterproductive in the UK though.
