Stock photos are ripe for humor. Like the guy in the middle looks pretty thrilled to be a part of this stock photo shoot. Doesn't exactly inspire a love for electronics engineering. ;)

If you were in the HDD fixing business also you would know that this is how it's done. :)

Where did you find it?

What's the problem? Everyone's wearing safety glasses.

I too point my instrument dials and displays away from myself when working, it adds to the excitement and mystery! You never know if that hot air nozzle is cold - and when it isn't, the surprise really lifts me up from the mundane drudgery of open-air data recovery.  :scared:

The lady on the right is the worst offender - yellow safety glasses and lilac shirt - that colour combination should never be worn together!

User Manual:
1. Put safety glass.
2. Handle iron in the hot metal part...
Fail... :-DD

i did this on accident once, when i was about to drop the iron, and my dumbass self tried to catch it...

The pain was worse than anything i have felt, and it did not subside for hours. I knew it was going to hurt too, becasue the skin had turned a off white, cooked flesh look. with the tinge of yellow from where it cooked it. did not hurt for the first 10 min...then i felt it..AND BOY DID I FEEL IT..

i went though what felt like 40 ice cubes, trying to deaden the nerves to the pain..and it was still horrid. SAFETY FIRST!!!!

Buy it, use it, break it, fix it, Trash it, change it, mail upgrade it, Charge it, point it, zoom it, press it, Snap it, work it, quick - erase it,

Well it saves the expense of anti-static wrist straps.

Basic 101 repair procedure. Threaten the subject and if that don't work throw it in the oven.

Man, if I had a dollar for every time I've burnt my fingers on soldering irons, and other hot tools! The pain never seems to stop :( That's why I keep a bottle of Burnjel in my workshop first-aid kit, and a few Burnshield dressings too. Pricey, but they do work wonders!

When I was like 14 years I had this terrible iron that took ages to warm up, so I developed the habit to hold it close to my lips to feel if it was heated up already. Until one day it was a bit too close  :scared: Now try the ice cube trick on your lip... And yes, I did the catching too one or 2 times, it's some kind of built-in response you can't suppress it seems.

Isn't the right thing to do is to avoid water, and put vegetable oil on the burn?
At least that's what works best for me.

I believe yellow tinted glasses are used to protect from blue / UV wavelengths, well, the real proper protection goggles do.

I was going to do a photoshoot for the uni I attend for a brochure they were going to give out. I was alright with it until they asked me to hold multimeter probes, measure a breadboard with only wires and no components while looking at a scope screen  :palm:

I haven't done it with an iron, but I did it with a small potted cactus that fell off of the counter when I was a kid.  Quick reflexes, and grabbed it hard to make sure I caught it well.  I caught it perfectly...up side down.  That sucked.

This reminds me of the times I instinctively tried to put my feet under a falling cellphone to minimize damage and ended up kicking it 3 meters further away. Luckily they were all Nokias so they look back at me and laugh, unscratched  :-DD

I went through a period of regularly burning myself on soldering iron, Rat Shack desoldering iron and butane mini torch that SWMBO got me a prescription for Silvadyne.  Ironically, she was the first to use it for a kitchen burn.  The burns still happen occasionally, but I don't worry about them, they heal.  Let's not forget soldering in shorts is always fun but I don't think the dogs like the smell of burning hair.

No, don't put stuff like oil (or butter) on burns.

When you go to hospital, they'll just have to scrub it off.

Work long enough around sharp or hot tools and you learn to jump backwards instead, that becomes the new instinct. I was taught that sharp tools should *be* sharp which means that my chisels, knives and plane blades are all sharp enough to shave with. Drop one of those and try to catch it and you come back without a finger or two.
Anybody got a syringe I can use to squeeze the magic smoke back into this?
