Hurricane Helene effects on global semiconductor mfg
« on: October 01, 2024, 06:45:20 pm »
Saw in the news here in the US today that this hurricane has hit an area in North Carolina where a major world supply of quartz is mined for the semiconductor market.  Several news outlets have more details.

I had no idea that there were quartz mines there or that it is a major world supply source.

Edit to add:  The quartz is used to make the crucibles they melt the silicon in and must be ultra pure and usually get used only once.

It's something like 80% of the world's supply. But the amount used by the semiconductor industry is low. There should not be supply chain impacts, if that's what you're concerned about.

Also I don't think the crucibles need to be as pure as the silicon used to make the boules themselves ... the latter is the real value add.
