Survey, Hardware Prototyping Preference
« on: June 12, 2018, 05:33:58 am »
Hi guys! :)

I'm an Electrical Engineering student from UCSD. I've been reading on the forum for quite some time now but never posted anything, first off, I'm excited to participate!
I'm currently working on a research project to gauge the motivation and preferences of how people prototype hardware solutions. I've been a hobbyist myself for years, that gives me a good understanding of what it takes, but I'd also like to check my own bias with everyone else's opinion. This survey will help my research figure out the pros and cons of the popular techniques so that hopefully I will be able to identify a path forward to bring the joy of electronics to more people.

Anyways, here is the survey. Your participation is much much appreciated!! Thanks in advance!

I think whole point is missed why we do prototyping in single question "we want to make prototyping painless". It's the pain that is useful of any prototyping. You learn best from the mistakes. Expensive mistakes = fast learning  :-+ :box:

Here's my academic history header if that helps! :) Not trying to spam or scam anyone, the survey can be done anonymously as well. I'm just interested in learning and interpreting the data from these responses.

Totally, failing and learning is the beauty and the fun of electronics. For the sake of this survey, I wanted to capture the full spectrum of intents of why people build things. I personally went through years of blowing up transistors and frying chips to get to a state of good understanding. In many cases, I find that people are not so much interested in the technical obstacles at first but simply want a certain idea/feature to work. From the point of view of a person who hasn't done electronics, a path that enables rapid validation of idea may lower the scare barrier of entry to the hobby just like how Arduinos mainstreamed embedded development, and that's what I'm curious to find out.

I love subjects like this. Will you publish when it's ready? From a more philosophical perspective I think it's all about to be a maker or a doer or a very practical dreamer in the first place.
PS: I submited the form, but I think you should be honest in the first place about "We're working on a platform that will make the prototyping process painless, are you interested to stay updated?" I feel I'm quite naif
