How NOT to modify graphics cards
« on: August 20, 2017, 10:02:11 pm »

I wish to propose a bit of a drinking game. I can't drink, but feel free to try this yourself, keeping in mind that you are doing so at your own risk.

Whenever you feel the urge to immediately end the video and watch something else, take a drink. If you manage to live through this video, you are clearly not human, but instead a real life incarnation of Bender from Futurama.
I forget who I am sometimes, but then I remember that it's probably not worth remembering.

They're getting a bit too close to "destroying iPhones for views" videos.

Lol true I think they may be getting to a point where they are pushing that a tad far.  I think the issue is that it actually DOES get more views, so they'll make content that attracts more views.

They seem to make good coin too, they recently bought some RED 8k cameras.  Like over 100k I think?  I didn't see their video on it just saw the title pop up.  I did not even know 8k was a thing yet.

It's not just the camera's that give it away. With that many people employed en the size of the production, you need good cash flow. Compared to everything else, people are very expensive.

Yeah that's true too, I keep thinking it's a hobby but it's probably a full time gig for them.

Based on the production quality I bet linus makes 6 figures in income.

Did anyone else get the "new red green show" reference? They used to play that on PBS late at night. My favorite was the episode where he makes surround sound and a big screen TV out of... Duct tape. Lots of duct tape. Also the surround sound gave true 360' sound by way of a single speaker cone duct taped to a ceiling fan above the binoculars ducted taped to the little CRT tv you would watch from. The whole show was like that. Kind of like what most youtube videos are like but years before youtube existed. It was like a Canadian redneck public access TV show. But since they were Canadian rednecks they didn't make you cringe like American rednecks. AVE is a Canadian redneck.

AvE seems to be fairly well educated, even though he manages to hide it sometimes. We might have very different definitions of rednecks :)

Some of their content is fairly decent. Stay away from Techquickie unless you want educational videos that have been researched by glancing at a Wikipedia article for two seconds and then regurgitating it all out onto a script. I still watch most of their stuff anyways.

Haha Red Green is great.  I totally got that reference.

If the woman don't find you handsome, at least they can find you handy!

Been a while since I've seen that show actually, not sure if it still plays.  I don't watch much TV though.

The entire channel is basically ads. Not just the embedded ads, the pop up ones, but half of the content. And they have some 4 million subscribers. The stuff they are advertising is usually overpriced computer stuff, sold in huge quantity.

Then again, any YT channel that reviews gear is some kind of advertisement.

However, I think their opinions are fairly modest usually and will highlight some features as described by the marketing team, even though it may be BS for 50% of people out there. They occasionally call out some cons or problems, but not much in the scripts.

I think you'll get way better opinions and content from off the cough and live shows, which is why I think their production values (i.e. too overproduced) are a bit sad. Also their recent videos seem to become more and more "memefied" with annoying voice pitch changes, confusing visual effects and downright weird humor.

Nevertheless I still watch most of their videos for a laugh. If I want to get decent information about computer gear I want to purchase, I will probably look some paper reviews up on e.g. hardware.info, or any other reviewer site.

Is that a prototype for the Kingpin card?

I hear Buildzoid mention epower and he used the old power delivery on some of his LN2 videos.

Linus is trying to get hold of AvE and will probably see a video with them in (AvE will be hidden I guess).

It's a hobby. PC tech is all a fashion statement these days.

Sorta, but I've used (and other people who are brave enough) external VRMs on reference NV cards for overclocking as well, way before the first KP card saw the light.
The new EPOWER with more beef and functions will go sale next month, so anyone could try this in pursue for speed.

Normal folk would as result buy customized cards like Kingpin, which have all power and control whizbang integrated already, so no soldering required.

If Louis says it's a lost cause, I'm going to take his word for it. I'll take Louis with a paint stripper over Linus with an angle grinder any day. Or Linus with any tool.

I would have thought you would be able to salvage a few components. Then again, that's not something that has to be explained to Louis? Mr. Rossmann? Either he saw that it was a lost cause, decided that the value of the time spent recovering parts is greater than the value of the components recovered, doesn't want to spend the time because it's his personal phone or has another reason beyond my comprehension.

In any case, I trust his judgement in these matters more than I trust my own.

Could very well be that the mainboard is messed up.

Perhaps the phone turns on after disconnecting the battery and power for 5 minutes, then lasts for half a day and has random hard shutdowns even while battery is nearly full. Some shutdowns will be reboots, but most of the time <2 days it will remain in a "bricked" state until you disconnect the battery.

This is how my Moto G died, and it's not an uncommon issue at all. Unfortunate that the mechanical design outlast the electronics, making the point of strongly build phones seem a bit useless.

"Probably"? According to one of his videos I just saw (the one about the Red Rocket-X card), he has 7 video editors. That's no hobby!
