I once spent Christmas day in the TTD airport lobby.

Not as bad as it sounds.  My friend drew the short straw and was stuck with being on-duty at the FBO to handle any general aviation (private plane) traffic.  So we got several families together and had a big party. The airport lobby was already decorated with a big tree, etc.  Nobody landed or departed the whole day.

Christmas is a winter festival designed to brighten up the coldest, darkest time of the year with a history going back thousands of years. The many symbols such as lights, decorated trees, holly, mistletoe also have similar ancient origins.

It seems this tradition of a mid-winter festival is mainly centered around Europe and the western hemisphere. Is there a similar winter festival in the eastern hemisphere?

Yeah, most of the symbols long pre-date Christianity.  They were re-cycled when Constantine I declared state sponsorship of Christianity.

Judging by the greatly lengthened delivery times, it appears that China (and perhaps other Asian countries?) are much more into their new-years celebrations than anything we see in the west.  It just happens to be scheduled a few months later.

Growing up in the northern hemisphere, it always fascinated me that people in Australia celebrate the holidays by going to the beach and having outdoor barbecue parties.  While we bundle up in mittens and hats to go outdoors in the snow.

Yes, there are, for example, in Russia: Orthodox pre-Christmas fasting begins on 28 November and ends after 40 days by evening worship. Christmas is celebrated on January 6 and 7.

May all of your electrons go forth and flawlessly perform their prescribed tasks; with nary a short cut circuit.
May the wealthy overlords bestow upon you great compensation for all of your hard work throughout the coming year.
May the light of abundant solar powered LEDs illuminate your path through the dark and twisted paths of the world.
May the trolls of the internet skip sprightly over your presence therein.
May the burden of material possessions be offset by an enormity of good friends.
I raise a toast to your good health (and mine) with a special thanks to Dave for hosting this forum so that we all can ramble on for another year or more
