Anybody have a Wyze or August smart lock?

I'm looking for a smart lock that has a separate keypad that can be placed some distance away from the lock.  I'm trying to understand how the keypad communicates.  If it's bluetooth, does that mean it will work when there is no internet connection or cell phone?  Does it communicate directly with the lock?  In general, does anybody know of a detailed description of how these smart locks work?  I haven't been able to find one.
