Yes, it's free and fun. I was a guest for about as long as it takes to join :)

To each his/her own, but I've seen other forums where the atmosphere just seemed too hostile for me and never joined as a result (in general, not specifically those aimed at electronics). So I looked around for a week or so before I joined to get a sense of the site and it's members.

I've just joined some days ago, with some questions (Dave's videos took my here).

However, there were some thougths on this forum (i've read somewhere cant find now) regarding to limiting the rights of newcomers, because too many new users are coming lately. Why would anyone feel free comfortable to join after this? To be the honest it is quite strange for me, too.

Their probably all spambots or scammers, dozens of them get blocked from registering every day by the filtering system (luckily or this would be an uncontrollable spam bomb in hours)

Most of the internet is read thousands of times more than it is written. Until you want to post something there is no reason to become a member, there is little reason to log in even if you are a member.

Guests greatly outnumbering logged in members is no surprise to me.

spambots sifting through the now very large site will show as guests, I have a tiny local forum that after 3 months is now getting up to 15 spam registration attempts a day and needless to say will have been well sifted through by now and on a list of sites to target, another forum that is dormant and been around for 3 years gets up to 50 attempted registrations a day

Crawler bots will show up too, yahoo was always terrible for showing up as 100's of visits per day on my forum

The one redeeming feature of Simple Machines-based forums is the "Show unread posts since last visit". This only works if logged.

Personally, I like and use that functionality very much.

Cheers

I found EEVBlog in a search (looking for independent reviews of Agilent's HH DMM's), and the forum once on the main EEVBlog site. I liked Dave's videos quite a bit, and figured worst case, I could still watch his vids and read threads if I didn't like the atmosphere on the site in terms of participating.

I liked what I saw, and joined. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute usefull information from time to time.  :)

I'm just not sure what I could add that's useful ATM, as I've a couple of items I could do reviews/tear-downs, but they'd either be repeats of what's here (U1252B), aren't popular (Weller WD1001), or relevant (most of what I have is Enterprise RAID related, not bench gear or projects).   ???

Some forums require a log-on to view photos and files as well.

This thread ignores that members not signed in are counted as guests.

Please no as that is a terrible idea... There have been many times in the past when some useful information was in an image / file on a forum which I was not registered on and would have no interest in registering on (say some gamer's forum showing an unusual cable pinout). Then I'd register, view the one image, and never return again.

true, although the default method of signing in keeps you signed in unless you clear cookies etc

I didn't say I like having to log into a site just to view images, just that I've been to a few that did it that way.  ;) And for the record, I hope that EEVBlog Forum doesn't ever resort to it either.

I think that the option of passing a human verification would be good for guests wanting to just read one thread and then go, I hate to think of the waste spammers and bots cause

I assume you mean entering a security code?

If so, it seems a good way to fight the mess (ATM anyway, as they're ever discovering new ways to pollute the web).

I thought we did -- maybe that's changed?  I definitely remember it wasn't until I signed up that I realised there were images attached to some posts; messages would make reference to them and I'd wonder where the links where hiding!

You could just close the forum and save all the bandwidth and resources.
