Please Register your product !! Ok did that, then what ?

I am a bit confused here with all that corporate policy's ,
when you buy or get one new device like a DMM (multimeter) or other tools,
all the companies pushing you to register the product online , even if in their documents,
they almost say " do not bother us about support " , contact you local dealer .

At 09/10/2010  (dd/mm/yyyy)
I had register my 28II to Fluke, the only proof that I got by doing that,
was one screen-shot that I got by my self ....  no email verification , no news , no contact since then..
And the funny part is that there is no member profile so to check any settings.
Its like " register your product " Thank you ... bye bye .

Today 22/07/2011  I registered to Agilent one U1272A,  they send to me one instant automated email,
and another one, final one, will come as soon they verify my product serial code.

I did not had to take any screen-shot, because I got just a "Thank you"  message,
and I am a member all ready .
And so any info gets in my profile.

Few months back I had become member at Chauvin-Arnoux,
they do not let you download documents if you do not register !! 
Never got from them even an email at Christmas ..  ;D

No I am not fun of the idea that my email box will get full of marketing spam,
but from another point of view I think that they must be able to inform me about any updates about the product it self.
And the point is that I am opening my door to them but they do not use it !!

There is no need to say that currently I am benchmarking Agilent , and their services by email.
And so I do not have an opinion about them yet.
But I do have for the other two !!  and that is, that they are terrible in communicating by using the internet.

I wonder, when Fluke had that Voltalert recall about a year ago, if they had sent out messages to those who had registered their products.

Seems like that's the only legitimate reason to register.

That said, I love to register because I like the idea of nerdy ultra-modern test equipment catalogs someday sitting in the same mailbox where I get old school fountain pen ink samples.  ;D

Valid points guys. I also registered my Fluke 289 but never received an email about the firmware upgrade that I found myself on the website.

I wonder if product registration is merely to create statistical data regarding the type of users that buy the specific product.

Product registration is quite often to allow the manufacturer to have some contact with an end user. Quite often they will only sell to distributors and it might be that if a company were to buy a lot of a product, (or worked in a specialist area) the company might contact them when developing new instruments. You can get a lot feedback by talking to a person who uses an instrument each day - it helps make the next one better.

Doh! Really?

The main reason is they send you advertising if they believe you have some spending power. Therefore I absolutely hate it when manufacturers make extended warranties dependent on registration. These shenanigans are the ideas of sick marketing assholes.

Some registration requests are outright stupid. I have a 5 port 100M Ethernet hub for 8 Euro in my junk box. It came with a product registration card. We have an electric kettle, it came with a registration URL. Register my arse.

Haha, I love it how you see the bright side of things BAW.  :)

I think the most plausible explanation is for the company to gain market insight, but one-way communications. That would be fine, if we were to get product updates ie two way comms.

i wasn't just refering to those companies that just then bombard you with adverts. Some companies do have two way communications with those who have registered. For instance not only product feedback but if there were a possible safety issue a responsible company would alert all those who have registered. From a company point of view offering an extended warranty to help get some of this feedback is a very cheap option. (Especially as the product shouldn't go wrong. ;D)

I will admit that I work for a company that does offer the extended warranties for product registration but this is because we would like to know where they are going and whether any of the distributers are selling where they should not be. Mind you, we don't make kettles.

By looking up the serial numbers of the instruments in its registration database, Megger was able to identify us as their rightful owner.

That's sounds a bit funny,  If I had any respond from those databases, even an automated one,
after the registration, I would able to prove ownership with my own copy of those documents !!

Short Update :
Products offered for reviews, they do not get accepted to be registered for warranty, as the retail ones.

Well there is no paper work about such subjects, and so its not my fault that I did try to register my unit.  :P
New games = new rules.

Well, perhaps registering a product or merchandise really means giving it away, according to the aspect below:



I guess that corporate talk (or legalese), that specially formulated language of specific societies, seems to be using ordinary grammatical terms (common wording) with meaning other than their regular grammatical or etymological meaning. And this is confirmed by the so-called Legal Fictions.

This is a very interesting article about the legal fiction called YOUR STRAWMAN or, in other words, Your Birth Certificate.

What a fraudulent world we live in...

Well about legalese ... one note on their web site ( no matter who is giving what ),
It would help to clear up such details.

Personally I feel blessed,   ;D LOL   that I can communicate directly with the right people at Fluke and Agilent.  ;)

By the way, I have not congratulated you for your latest review, which, in my opinion, was a professional piece of work!

Congratulations, dear Kiriakos! If I was producing test instruments you would be one of my first choices to review them, after I saw what an excellent job you did with Agilent U1272A!

X% of people X% more likely to buy another product of that brand or something like that.

We getting out of topic, but this idea of yours does not work.

When you send a product to be reviewed by a freelancer,  you can never predict the outcome.
You could gain credit , or an major disappointment.
Its true that the current suits are very happy with the outcome, the product is a winner,
and their joy is understandable. 

The other tactic about giving for free some units here and there just to create a bit of Buzz about your brand name,
I think that it does not work well in long term.

I also believe that: scripta review manent  ( works best)  :)
