Forum Registration issues
« on: February 08, 2020, 07:26:00 am »
Not knowing if this is a real problem or not...... however I was contacted today by an unknown to me person in Germany with some info he wanted to post but had numerous issues trying to complete registration that apparently failed each time without him knowing why.

After these unsuccessful registration attempts he sent me this:
I just got an e-mail earlier from eevblog.official@gmail.com and asked to delete all my registration attempts completely.

 :-//
Anyone else new here had registration issues ?

What are the traps for newbies ?

There are supposedly issues with registering on using a mobile phone (or the mobile version of the site).

Ah, that might explain things some Dave as this guy uses a cellular modem for his connection.
I'll advise him to get to a PC with a permanent internet connection for registration then he should be OK to log into EEVblog from whatever device he chooses.

Can't you request the desktop site from the mobile browser?

Yep, the font colour is really hard to see though, I should probably fix that.

Dave, the unknown person I mentioned in the OP has abandoned their efforts to become a member after many attempts unless you can assist.
Registration is apparently successful however the email with a link to activate their new membership NEVER arrives !

Spam folders have been checked and alternative emails used and much hair pulled out !

Is it some SMF bug ?

Can the login and password used for registration be used for login without account activation ?
Really  :-//

How many new members are you potentially not gaining because of this ?
Drop me a PM with a contact email that I can pass onto this chap if you like.

Send me the persons username and email address, they have likely been caught in a spam filter.

OK I'm not privy to their username so let me chase it up although I suspect it's the middle of the night now where he is.
Send to you in a PM Dave ?

Digging through emails from him I found this:
I also sent a mail to 'eevblog.official@gmail.com' yesterday or the day before or the day before the day sent, no response.
I'll send you a PM with his email so maybe you can put the two together.

FYI, I do not read that account, it's my logistics person. Maybe I should change that for forum stuff.

I just experienced the snafu using a smartphone.  Just clicked the Chrome 'Desktop Site' and everything worked fine.

There may be countermeasures e.g. a hidden google captcha. I co-run a forum (not electronics) and 1/3 of signups are spammers, mostly trying to sell fake passports. So we now have a manual approval step, which is a hassle but was necessary. We also have the hidden captcha (which is quite effective in blocking bots) and some other things I won't talk about openly :)

I believe this forum is an open source one so extra vulnerable to hacks.

Just to give an update. I have just spent a long time with this issue on a mobile. Switching to desktop let me in.
On desktop I noticed an extra bot-question that didn't show on the mobile. I guess that's the problem.

Also since this is my first post; hi all
