I think only you can say how much popular the forum is getting. Maybe you could show some forum statistics.

Btw I think at some point it will be inevitable that you should name some moderators and create more categories, also implement some sort of rating system so posts don't get buried on the flood of newbies posts, but also newbies get attention as well. That seems to work very well on big forums that I'm in.

Up to June 2015, I'm guessing the year 2014 was like voltage regulator output, stabilized with ripple ?  :-DD

Interpretation is yours.  ;)

It is also usual to have 50-something 'guests' viewing a topic?

Yes.
A lot of them would be search bots.
But also quite few from web searches.

Long time no update since June last year, here we go.

Not much to say though, except the page views keeps growing naturally  :-+, few blips at the online views, but not significant.

Have to say its time to make few spikes as last time Dave.  >:D

Imo your scope giveaway timing is just perfect, curious too to see how it affects these charts as previous events and contests.  :-DD

Attached below forum statistic charts up to yesterday.

It may be worth splitting some of the more popular categories

That brings up the question of how people actually use the forum.
Personally, I don't browse categories, I just hit the "Show unread posts" link and pick a subject that interests me based on the title.

Dave.
That is how I use it, after scanning through a page or two of the newest stuff I visit the posts I replied to or started.

Hopefully this will bring more supporters to the forum.

Damage report ...errr .. Special edition update on the Keysight scope giveaway contest.  >:D

Brief summary :

- As expected, there are some overshoots/spikes, but imo this time is better than previous contest when it comes to post flood, I'm guessing probably its part of Dave's new tighter rules.

- New post count record the day after the contest announcement, blame it on Dave as usual.  :P

Attached below two charts, one as usual the long term trend view, and 2nd one is the zoomed view starting from Jan 2016 for better detail on the contest's effect.

Interpretation is yours.

I know it's a good thing...
But is it just me, or has the volume of posts increased a lot recently?
I now commonly see 3-4 pages of posts when I hit the Unread Posts link, and that's only after like an 8 hour sleep or something.
I couldn't keep up before reading all the posts, and now it's shifted from simply too hard, to impossible!  :o

Dave.

Thats a good thing. Watching you, lead me here, i was skeptical i would find help at first, becasue of prior forum experiences. Then i found knowlege, amazing community, and endless help around every turn. Now i spend hours a day reading posts, or trying to help other with things i may know about. Increasing my knowledge. SO in short. THANK YOU! :)
Buy it, use it, break it, fix it, Trash it, change it, mail upgrade it, Charge it, point it, zoom it, press it, Snap it, work it, quick - erase it,

Stats can be easily dragged of the database - but direct access to the database (even read only) will be only to a very select few.

Dave.

Perhaps - setting a profile of some sort to post in more 'sophisticated' categories.
I see some inane questions being posted in the 'wrong' categories... not wanting to sound like a snob (but I may be), they really should be in 'Beginners' or 'General Chat'.
Don't ask a question if you aren't willing to listen to the answer.

I know I'd pay a penny to hear myself talk ... maybe charge a penny to post.  ;D

... as if that's even possible in the SMF structure.
May your deeds return to you tenfold.

Given the size of this forum perhaps it is time to market it more effectively, instead of changing to post as suggested above.

I can only speak as one poster; but this is the first forum I have joined since 1994 where I actually regularly read the ads more than once per to day; sometimes several times a day.

Long time no update , here we go until yesterday.

- Looks like new posts and new threads rate are stabilizing.
- A blip of new members joining at the end of Jan 2017.
- Page views hit a new record at early Jan 2017, congratz Dave.

Dave, may I make a suggestion: Perhaps it's time to review the number of moderators you have. I've seen a noticeable increase in the number of new users who like to stir the pot and that just gets the existing trolls all hot and bothered. Not to mention the sheer number of new posts generated each day.

It's a huge work load for you and Simon. If you do decide to do this, hand-pick those who meet your criteria, don't just open it up to applications or you'll get all and sundry sticking their hand up for it.

There are a lot of mature and sensible people on here who I'm sure would be happy to lend a hand.

Now before someone posts a reply going on about turning this forum into a "policed" forum where free speech will be affected, it's not about that. People are free to express whatever opinion they want but there is a right and wrong way to do it. Moderators aren't there to silence people they disagree with, they're there to respond to instances where things just get out of control or to deal with malicious users.

IMHO Simon and Dave do a pretty good job but it must be remembered that it is not entirely without member input and in some way this makes the forum all of ours and hence it constantly evolves.
If the standard of what's expected behaviour is clear in the stickys and we're not too shy to use the report button then issues can be dealt to in a timely manner.
If more Moderators are needed thought could be given to complementing the time zones of Simon and Dave for better 24hr coverage.

How much time/week is normally spent on current day moderation duties ?

Dave.

Don't panic, Dave, keep up your opinionated rants on non-EE/political  subjects that annoy people and no one asked you for (your "opinons" are not THAT important to the world, sorry, people subscribe to you for EE related, not "Dave has an opinion on world events"), and your view counts (and forum members) will soon take a nose dive. Don't be a victim of your own success~
