Nice find.
I was supposed to be at the Fluke labs in 2 weeks time, now I don't feel so bad about not going and filming it :)

"other meters fail more dramatically"  ;D A bit of an understatement.

Now you know why Harbor Freight gives these meters away for free: http://www.harborfreight.com/free-multimeter-web.html (Fire extinguisher not included.)

Am I just paranoid or did that look kind of hazardous the way he was conducting the high voltage test? Holding the leads in his hand that is. I'd assume they are not specified for 8kV or are they? The HV supply surely is floating (and low current) so not that hazardous but still...

If those leads are rated for CAT III 1000 V or CAT IV 600 V, they should safely handle 8 kV transients from a low source impedance, so an 8 kV ESD should not pose any problems.

Being hit by the ESD gun output may give you a jolt but wouldn't be dangerous. It would likely be similar any ESD shock you'd get from a doorknob, etc.

Because it's a "human body model" it can only maintain 8kV for a few microseconds , something like 0.1pF ?
And that it has hardly any joules at all , it's designed to test whether or not will the internals fail due to the ESD induced by the bare leads .

It hurts when you have it turned up high. When testing at work I do the test to see it complies - then try to break it .

Interesting they only test to 3 V/m on radiated immunity tests. I would have thought that the meter would be aimed at industrial applications that would require 10V/m.

Most of the rest of the tests are required by 61010 before it goes on the market anyway.
