Urgent - Yahoo Groups Purge
« on: January 14, 2020, 07:01:10 am »
Can anyone who was a member of Electronics related groups please make a request for a copy of your subscribed groups data. Once yahoo process the request it should pull the entire group along with any files and links into one zip archive. Would appreciate an unadulterated copy of any Tek or HP groups or any other electronics related groups. It's easy to do just use the below link.

Get in early or miss out, the last (last) chance for data requests is January 31, 2020.

There's a rather large project going on to archive YG, see if they may have pulled your groups already (and make a request to get it if they haven't):

They are saying basically what I'm telling people to do now.

Edit:

It seems you can still join groups ok or at least ask permission to, but yahoo are still removing existing data and I expect some groups will be moving away from yahoo on top of that. It's a lot easier to get it now than chase it later.

Quite a few of the yahoo groups have moved over to google groups: E.g.

https://groups.io/g/TekScopes

The ones that I am aware of have taken everything with them.

I know you guys are trying to be helpful but the message I'm trying to put through is you might find it practical to take a copy of your subscribed groups completely now while you can. I got the ones I was signed up to at the time, but not all. Some I might not get access to, but also not everyone is aware it's happening if you haven't checked for a while.

The download request takes quite a while for them to get around to. But when i did get it the backup was not quite complete since it didn't include any photos from the photo sections.

I have archived all of my groups using the software PG Offline from personalgroupware.com before that.

In general its becoming clear in the past few years that the internet is far from a permanent place. Sites slowly rot away and disappear off the face of the world wide web. Be it small websites that go away because something bad happens to the website or the owner, sometimes businesses decide a website is no longer profitable and shuts it down or the website is not built to hold historic data in general. Social networks like Twitter actually make it very difficult to access old content trough the browser or the app. So yeah this is only going to be getting worse.

Last couple of days before they shut off requests.
The backlog will take a few days but should still go through.
