Firefox and Skype crashing randomly and intermittently after update

Has anyone else running 64-bit Windows been experiencing this?

I was annoyed to death by repeated requests to update both Firefox and Skype, so I finally gave in and performed the update...big mistake. Now both programs seem to crash intermittently, as if some background event is triggering a fault, i.e. I'd step away from my computer for lunch or jump in the shower and come back to find both programs had crashed.

I think the problem is with a windows update I have been having a similar problem, but with me it is the mouse and key board wont respond it is as if the computer has shut down but left the last screen displayed, started happening after the last windows update.

Interesting observation. Now that you mention it, I did recently push 40+ updates prior to updating Firefox and Skype. I'll def have to look into that.

As am I. Updating "fixed" the constant pop-up pestering to update the software, self-referencing as it sounds.

I think I found my problem, the last auto windows update installed internet explorer yet again and that seems to have a dislike for virtual box so I binned both of them.

Uninstalled all updates applied to Microsoft Windows (as opposed to Office and other MS software) from 3 days ago and Firefox hasn't crashed since. If there weren't so many, I'd uninstall each one by one to identify the culprit, but I have better things to do at the moment.

How do security updates figure into this? Don't apply until you get hacked or infected by a virus?

Never had that happen, since the majority of the stuff comes from browsing questionable websites or running questionable programs downloaded from such sites. You just need to be careful with both of those.

Sure, it's all either porn sites or shady sites like Yahoo! mail and Vodafone.co.uk that are the source of drive-by downloads. Plenty of cases of ad networks serving viruses on reputable websites due to insufficient security or oversight on their part. Guess they also subscribe to only reactive security.
