what is the most interesting EEVBlog video
« on: April 04, 2014, 08:02:49 pm »
Hey folks

I'm trying to convince my friend who is in an electronics engineering program with me, that the EEVBlog is filled with lots of wonderful, interesting, and valuable information and that she should get into it more.
The problem is that she hates watching videos that are longer than roughly 1 minute.  :-//

Somehow I managed to convince her to watch a single video up to an hour long, but I can't decide on which video to show her. So im wondering, which video in your opinion is the most interesting. I know that she gets put off by anything that involves programming; or when lots of technical data gets thrown her way.

I was thinking maybe a mailbag video? I'd love to hear your suggestions.
but there is a good chance I'm wrong.

Pick whatever you think it's more interesting:

https://www.youtube.com/user/EEVblog/videos?sort=p&view=0&flow=grid

For me, the soldering tutorials (3 videos) were very useful when Dave made them, as I didn't know much about it back then. Since then I've also found Pace's youtube channel and their training videos and other youtube videos and with modesty I can say I'm much, much better at soldering now.

I don't think the mailbag videos would be good for someone to make an impression of a channel like Dave's - the channel is more than entertainment and opening packages. There are some reviews bundled with some historic information and explanations that are more worthy of being a first video someone sees.

I'd suggest Dave's lab PSU design series. As a beginning engineer myself, I've found those videos extremely compelling and helpful in demonstrating the decision making that is required in practical design which I was never really shown in school. If you get your friend to watch the first video in the series, she might not want quit watching and may even be inspired to design something herself.

No, she should go into the library and read one more engineering book. Much higher information density than videos.

As a student she is old enough to make her own decisions and if she don't like videos she don't like videos. No point in forcing her and making her sit through one for an hour.

The soldering on the basics would be good for a good grounding - when I did my degree they didn't bother teaching soldering.

Then again - the fault finding ones teach a good approach to debugging a circuit.

Or how about a tear down where Dave explains why some of the decisions have been made (for instance a multimeter where the plastic case had extrusions through the PCB to act as blast shields)

Or some of the microcurrent ones where Dave explains what to consider when things go into production. (Also something completely ignored in my degree course.)

Or how about exploding capacitor?

Or review of some of the fundamentals?

Or just give her the list and say pick one. (I wouldn't recommend the one where he introduced the neuroelectronics project)

I'd go for the canyoning / Fluke torture test. Or the one where he blows the crap out of that power supply. Or the recent one about the cheapo soldering station (Sagan is funny).

im going to agree with both dongulus and bored at work.

i liked the power supply design videos. the way he lays everything out, tells why he chose what he did, then throws it all out the damn window and starts over, lol.  i like things where they talk about design. WHY things are put where they are. i know (some) theory. theory can be learned anywhere. why/how things are done in the real world, especially by someone whos btdt and knows his shit, i find interesting.

otoh, everyone has different learning styles. i like daves videos, there are tons of ppl with electronics videos out there, some, i just cannot watch. different ppl will explain things in different ways, just the same as different ppl understand things in different ways. you need to find someone who explains things in a similar way to how you understand things or the videos (or books, or lectures, ect..) are not going to be as effective at best, or completely useless at worst for you.

I would go for one of his rant videos. They are always entertaining and he still manages to explain why something is wrong and how it should have been done.
Really, find a part of electronics she(a girl in electronics?! not many of those) likes and show her a video on that.

Important question here is what is your friend interested in EE field. Anything else and its going to be boring as hell to start with..

So instead of asking forums, ask your friend whats interest him. Then go and find video of that topic..

Personally since i'm not professional in field, i like to watch everything... There is always some tips and tricks i dint know before...

Ask her to watch the DSA repair videos.  It's like a murder mystery novel for geeks.
