So long and thanks for all the fish.
« on: December 15, 2012, 07:43:44 pm »
A few months ago, I paid some guy on the internet for my boarding pass on the spaceship. I still haven't been sent my ticket yet but was told in an email that I definitely will receive it soon.

And I don't know what time I am supposed to be at the airport. Don't want to be late!

What to know if anyone here has any similar problems in regards to getting away on time and be interested to know what arrangements you've made.

OT: I cannot understand the rationale for the Apocalypse.  The Mayan long calendar cycle simply ends on 12/21 there is no mention of the end of the world.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon

Its like saying Dec 31 2012 is the end of the western 2012 calendar.  That's it.  Probably the more analogous event is a western leap year,  as each cycle repeats Feb 29th disappears,  and all this is for is to correct for the small changes in timing from the earth's rotation around the sun.  The same thing is for the Maya, except the cycle involves far more planets and conditions.

Well, no matter what happens, I am also getting a free interstellar passport as part of the deal. Worth the trip just for that.

I still need to find out if I need a work visa on Alpha Centauri or if I have automatic refugee status.

Hahaha. We know Santa is real. I sat on his lap yesterday.

Cynic?
Just watch him be part of the big push and shove when the shit starts to hit the fan.

I'm really surprised we are not seeing web-adverts by 'Mayans', for their next edition calendar.
You'd think there'd be a strong market demand.

Though personally I always write dates in the form YYYYMMDD, which isn't going to wrap around for a while yet. Might become a problem in about 8000 years, if I manage to self-engineer to an immortal space-faring form. But that seems increasingly unlikely. Otoh if I do succeed, in 8000 years it's going to be a bitch of a problem going through all my archives and upgrading the date format to something longer.

I had a friend who worked on fixing Y2K bugs as a consultant.

He changed it so that dates >2000 were represented with alphabetical characters.

So we could make year 10000 be year "A000" and have at least 26,000 years left. Then we'd need to think of another solution.

I've stockpiled 1 cubic metre of water and 200 tins of baked beans. I'm ready.

You're trying to *create* the apocalypse, aren't you?

Yeah. Was wondering the same thing. I reckon add some beer and cabbage and he'll be a force not to be messed with.

Anyone know for sure what time the end of the world and all of humanity is supposed to occur?

I've heard 11:11 UTC, but I find it kind of hard to believe in such a coincidence, and that the universe's basic time system revolves around UTC. On the other hand, it is called coordinate universal time for some reason, so the Mayans may have been onto something.

This is important because we have to plan travel arrangements to the partydoomsday shelter. And we can't arrive until there's an actual end of the world event. Typical bureaucracy getting in the way.

In the 21st century during the 12th month on the 21st day at 12:21:12 UTC I thought everybody knew that.  Guess not.

well.........maybe some social work.....
go to Bugarach with some hot soup and cheer up all the sad fellows which didn't get saved by Aliens.... "Come on buddy......the next end of the world is just two years ahead...try it another time......"

Maybe just take a bottle of champaign and pop it after midnight (22.).....well, we didn't die.........well, wait......Dave, could you please give us a note if you didn't die on that date?!..... we (in the time zones behind you) then have a few hours left to save us ;)

Would the Mayans have been on UTC? I would have thought that they would be on an American time zone
