Emoticon Workarounds (Skype for Business)
« on: April 06, 2017, 09:59:20 pm »
It's being forced on us, and we are using it. But, the chats are polluted with automatic emoticons. How are we to work around this? I can turn it off on my screen, but that is a local user setting. I send code snippets and it's a problem...

Even when you want to use them, they don't turn out the same if you have different versions or maybe a different font? I just know I sent a green checkmark to my big busted boss and she came back wondering if I was commenting on her cleavage! What does this translate into for you? (Y) I guess that could be interpreted as such.?.

Google says:
Quote
Disable Emoticons in Skype. Go to Tools > Options IM & SMS and then select IM appearance. In the right pane uncheck Show emoticons and then Save. This will stop emoticons from showing up in your IMs and disable them in your screen too so you can't send them.

This is going to be one of those things... There is no Tools...

Now, I said Skype for Business, and that is a thing different than the consumer Skype that everyone else knows and uses. This business version is the same as Microsoft Lync, which is now Skype for Business. So, I probably should have said Lync because I'm thinking one skype is not well known from the other skype. And their icons are the same, only with reverse colors...

What does this translate into for you? (Y)
(Y) = Yes / Thumbs Up

Skype list here: https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA12330/what-is-the-full-list-of-emoticons
Skype For Business: https://blog.thoughtstuff.co.uk/2015/03/skype-for-business-full-list-of-emoticons/

and +1 for turning them off but as you say it's a local settings so text/code containing emoticon combinations still show at the receivers end.
I usually slap the code into notepad and send it as an attachment / link to shared file

.. but you just encouraged me to google and ... https://superuser.com/questions/811918/escape-skype-messages-to-use-special-character-combinations
Put "!! " before your text/code and the recipient will not see emoticons at their end.

You should still have access to the tools menu, it's hidden under the "gear" icon on the right hand side :

(just above the little magnifying glass icon).

In there you can disable the emoticons (well it's present in my skype for business anyway).

cheers,

According to:
https://community.skype.com/t5/Windows-desktop-client/Disable-Emoticons-in-Skype-for-Business/td-p/4607810

Apparently, only the recipient can turn off the emoticon function.
