Part of that is in whatever your definition of left and right are. They have different meanings in different parts of the world and have changed over time.
Regardless of political leanings people tend to vote in their own self interest. Being a fan of small government that has always made me leery of unionized public employees. It is too easy for police, firemen, teachers and others to point to less than ideal results in their various areas and suggest that all that is needed is more money. For higher pay to attract higher quality, for more specialists and whatever. It all sounds reasonable, but rarely seems to turn out as predicted.
When Telecom Australia was a govt owned enterprise, with a strong union, if you reported a noisy phone line, a Tech tested the line from the nearest Exchange test desk, then somebody came out & fixed it in the next few days.
The fault would then be recorded for future reference.
With privately owned Telstra, I reported a noisy line in January 2013, a "tech" came out, diagnosed a faulty leadin cable, but for some reason, he couldn't pull a new one through the conduit, so arranged a "contract team" to come out a week later.
I was away when they were due, & when I came back, all was working, so I assumed they had done the job.
Over the next
seven years, we had repeated episodes of high noise, & following the visiting techs around like a shadow, I
watched what they did.
It became patently obvious that the cable had never been changed, but by fiddling around reterminating it, they managed to get the line back, though it was never really noise free.
Finally, in 2020, we were notified that we needed to be connected to NBN's "fibre to the curb" system, so I thought I had better get the lead in sorted out once & for all.
This time, a real tech came out, verified that the leadin cable was faulty, & pulled a new one through----something that none of his predecessors wanted to do.
By the way, I could have pulled a cable through, myself---but I'm not allowed to!
Another great trick was when my neighbour's phone line failed, Telstra "jury- rigged" a line from my cable pit, through my garden, over my roof, & down to his place.
A clever trick, & something the old Telecom Aust might have done "to get out of trouble" for maybe, a week.
This "bodge" was there for eighteen months or so!
I'm sure their "techs"are cheaper to employ than somebody with a functional brain, though!
