EEVBlog Map
« on: May 31, 2019, 11:02:41 pm »
Is there any interest in a location map for the members of EEVBlog?

I have done this for a few groups, face book, and yahoo groups that I am involved with and would be happy to start one for this group if there either is not one already started or there is interest from the group.

Location on the map can be pin-pointed right over your location, or generic to within the neighbourhood or just the city depending on how secure you are in wanting others to know your location.

The other maps that I have started have been well received and have allowed members to discover that they have neighbours with similar interests and new friendships have been formed by this.

Post a link if its not hard to do, and we will see how many people sign up.
I assume its not a manual process on your part?

What's that? A country icon below my username? When did that get there?

I don't think a central repository containing even semi-specific information about the locations of members of an occasionally heated discussion forum is a great idea. While facebook moms can go on about their exact locations all they want, I prefer to have a good grasp of who knows where I live.
I forget who I am sometimes, but then I remember that it's probably not worth remembering.

OK so started I the map

https://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=3453671

open the map click on the additions tab, then use either the add marker simple or add marker detailed which lets you add email and website addresses etc.

Please make sure you at least enter a name, otherwise it calls you anonymous which benefits nobody.

I tried to add a marker but it didn't do anything when I clicked on the map to add the location.

Perhaps it isn't set up to be edited by anyone other than the owner?

I also had no luck.  It would seem reasonable to have access limited, but I'm not keen to sign up to yet another site.

Seems to work fine here. My entry is on the site now.

You didn't have to sign up or sign in?

I tried in both Chrome and Firefox and it seemed to be doing something - but it never actually "took".

Tried again today and it sort of worked. Added a marker but it says Anonymous rather than Tom45.

Some of you guys are really putting your street addresses in there on a public forum?  :o

Getting people to set their country flags has been contentious enough in the past!

I think town is enough detail. While my location can be easily discovered from here in 2 clicks I'd not go around putting my name on a map in my exact location. I'll go for the nearest main road.

Added my pin. Not sure what anyone can do knowing where I live. You can Google that, my DoB, phone number and the rest here in Sweden. So it's not something we Swedes worry about.

i learnt a hard lesson when what i am certain are people living just a few doors down phoned me up pretending to be the police - and they were very convincing other than the claimed misdemeners were so ridicolous sthat I sort of knew something was up. I no longer publish my phone number. i live in an area where people get jeleous if you buy a house because they are on benefits. How i wish I could really afford to not live with the riff raff.

We should be very careful with identity theft.

No I do not own Zeemaps.

Yes I have a paid subscription to Zeemaps which prevents the maps from being frozen after 100 visits.

Yes I know I am a relatively newcomer to the EEVBlog site, but I figured this was a way I could contribute to the group.

Putting your pin on the map is totally voluntary.

I have a few other maps that are popular for the groups they are on, and these maps have allowed members to find out that they have a neighbour that is into similar interests.

I only put a suburb down - and I won't even guarantee it's the correct suburb, but the postcode is right.

Did you keep a copy of the custom URL it provided?  If so, you can use this to go back and edit your marker.  I just changed the colour of my pin.
