Help in choosing an University for Exchange
« on: October 20, 2015, 11:05:14 am »
Good morning guys,

I am an Electronics and Telecomunication Engineering student in PUC-MG Brazil. Brazilian IC (integrated circuit) industry has been dead for many years now, but it is restarting. After the last IC industry closed, the engineering courses stopped teaching how to design and manufacture ICs to its students, they only teach how to use them. And, thanks to my "luck", IC design and manufacture is exactly what I want to do. Working in the design and manufacturing of high-speed desktop CPUs is my ultimate goal.
I have decided to do an exchange through my university's program. And I have a list of places I can go to, but I would like to know if you guys know the universities or even study at them. You know, I don't want to spend this amount of money and be back at Brazil unable to work in the "reborn" industry.

So here are my options:

Australia  :-+ Queensland University of Technology
But they seen to not have IC courses  |O

US:
New Mexico State University

University of New Mexico – UNM -Albuquerque BREAKING BAD!!!!

I am still checking if Koreans have IC manufacturing classes in English, but they have the best courses!

South Korea:
Hanyang University

Inha University

Soongsil University

Guys, from now on I haven't checked the programs yet (sorry for that), I only discovered the university program a few days ago, and I have only four days to finish the process!! So please, help!  :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

Ireland:

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology

(I haven't checked the programs for all of those yet, but I think there is no Electronics in English :'( :'( :'():

Germany

FH Schmalkalden

Hochschule Furtwangen University

Regensburg University of Applied Sciences

Italy:

Politecnico di Torino

Università degli Studi di Cagliari

Università degli Studi di Genova

Università degli Studi di Messina

Poland:

Silesian University of Technology

Wroc?aw University of Technology

Thank you!!

How about the TUE in Eindhoven, The Netherlands? NXP is next door...
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Hello nctnico,

I can only choose those, they are part of a program where both my university and the university I am going to become free for a semester. This way I can use the money to pay for rent and food!

Thanks.

Choose the best university that will take you. Don't rely on English tuition in a non-English speaking country. Learn the language. Immerse yourself in the language, study it formally an hour or two a day, and socialise lots with the locals, stay away from English/Portuguese/[other languages you speak] speakers. If you do that you'll learn very quickly. A couple of months or more extra time to learn the language before you commence your studies would be highly desirable. Don't get too hung up on IC manufacturing per se, but choose subjects/courses that cover the fundamental science and engineering behind it.

Try Youtube for your research.  I would be very surprised if Korea had courses in English so unless you are a whiz kid you would have to learn Korean very fast (by the first test).
Maybe before class starts:

But my guess is they have the most advance courses (they won the Darpa Robot test)

Here is one prof from New Mexico

Schools advertize on Youtube

Searching on "Hanyang University" on YT comes up with over 12,000 hits.  Some from exchange students sharing their experience.  This seems doable with a list of 5 schools.

good luck
