I agree that Eagle is dead and has no future at autodesk.
At work we made the switch from Eagle V7 to KiCad.
To be honest, it wasn't easy. A great help was this online course:
https://www.udemy.com/course/kicad-like-a-pro-2e/ I recommend it.
But then, changing EDA is always a painful experience. I have used Altium Designer for a whole year and I never got really used to it.
This was partly because windows is required, something I detest.
I didn't try any Eagle importers or converters. Instead, I wrote my own ULP that converted the symbols and attributes from generic components.
Because all symbols and footprints are stored in human readable ascii, I did a lot of work using a texteditor in order to re-use our Eagle libs.
Also, I created so-called "atomic" libs in KiCad in order to keep the same workflow as in Eagle.
After having done almost two projects in KiCad, I must say that I don't want to go back to Eagle.
Some things are still better and easier in Eagle. Other things are better in KiCad.
The support for 3D models and the built-in 3D viewer works great.
There's also a powerful plugin for FreeCad:
https://kicad.org/external-tools/stepup/My impression so far about KiCad V5:
- library creation (symbols, footprints) is less easy then with Eagle.
- schematic capture is ok.
- layout editor is way ahead of Eagle.
- documentation is ok.
- forum & community is great.
- it's unbeatable in terms of price/quality ratio
KiCad V5 is still lacking some important things but these are dealt with in version V6 which looks very promising.
I would say, give it a serious try and don't give up.
