Eagle CAD licence without Fusion360?
« on: January 15, 2021, 07:24:08 am »
Does anyone know what's going on with Autodesk's Eagle CAD.

I just wanted to purchase the Eagle licence to be able to increase the board area but it looks like the only option is to purchase it with Fusion360.

https://www.autodesk.com/products/eagle/free-download?plc=F360&term=1-YEAR&support=ADVANCED&quantity=1#internal-link-buy

I can't see the link for only Eagle CAD Subscription.

Eagle is dead, forget about it.

And yes, their wording on Linux is a polite version of "go f*** yourself."

It used to be pretty decent and stable option for Linux.

I hate KiCAD. I respect it but the flow is so stupid there.

I agree. For now I'm holding on to the last usable version, but the writing is on the wall. KiCAD is the only real option. I'm waiting for v6 though, there are some nice improvements planned.

And what is also strange, although my licence was not active, now i see that it's marked as "Premium For Commercial Use".

Perhaps, someone who was managing the licences, just gave that Premium for free to everyone :D

LOL

I agree that Eagle is dead and has no future at autodesk.

At work we made the switch from Eagle V7 to KiCad.
To be honest, it wasn't easy. A great help was this online course: https://www.udemy.com/course/kicad-like-a-pro-2e/ I recommend it.
But then, changing EDA is always a painful experience. I have used Altium Designer for a whole year and I never got really used to it.
This was partly because windows is required, something I detest.

I didn't try any Eagle importers or converters. Instead, I wrote my own ULP that converted the symbols and attributes from generic components.
Because all symbols and footprints are stored in human readable ascii, I did a lot of work using a texteditor in order to re-use our Eagle libs.
Also, I created so-called "atomic" libs in KiCad in order to keep the same workflow as in Eagle.

After having done almost two projects in KiCad, I must say that I don't want to go back to Eagle.
Some things are still better and easier in Eagle. Other things are better in KiCad.
The support for 3D models and the built-in 3D viewer works great.
There's also a powerful plugin for FreeCad: https://kicad.org/external-tools/stepup/

My impression so far about KiCad V5:
- library creation (symbols, footprints) is less easy then with Eagle.
- schematic capture is ok.
- layout editor is way ahead of Eagle.
- documentation is ok.
- forum & community is great.
- it's unbeatable in terms of price/quality ratio  >:D

KiCad V5 is still lacking some important things but these are dealt with in version V6 which looks very promising.

I would say, give it a serious try and don't give up.

Also take a look at Horizon EDA. Features look pretty good and at least it has a better (as in more professional) component management system compared to Kicad: https://horizon-eda.org/

I hate KiCAD. I respect it but the flow is so stupid there.

It is part of the change curve. Denial, anger, exploring, acceptance. I was angry at Eagle when they moved to subscription model like many others. Even though I never had a commercial license, it was always in my mind to buy the cheapest one that allowed 4 layers, and commercial products. I tried to switch to Kicad few times and I hated it every time. But once I approached it with patience and open mind, it all came natural. I just ordered my first 4 layers board assembly made in Kicad from JLC. I would never go back to Eagle. I can’t wait to see version 6.
Fear does not stop death, it stops life.
