Well, yes, but I imagine the logic is that you cannot use a Greek capital A as a special symbol in a mathematical formula because it would be no different from a Roman letter A, and there would therefore be no point in having it.

Don't know if you're bored of this yet Dave, but here's an attempt at an Omega gif to use as a button

Edit: Balls. It appears I was late to the party. Oh well, now there are two.

Here is a possibly better gif with a transparent background:

Here is a possibly better gif with a transparent background:
What the best way to use it?

Right click and copy image address?
Then paste address between the Insert Image brackets like this:

Yes, although I think making it "bold" was a mistake. Maybe this instead?

Yes, that looks good. I think an Ohm smiley is a good idea. You can't always rely on Latex because it might be blocked by some firewalls: I'm at work at the moment and just see code.

I'd also recommend SVG but the forum doesn't seem to support it. Below I've tried using image tags to display an SVG of the Omega symbol but it doesn't work.

I do like the idea that it reminds people of the Latex command and that's it's available.
Although I think we get the best of both world's, as the forum will automatically convert the Latex command into the smiley gif without Latex support, just like every other smiley.

Omega now added, testing....
42\$\Omega\$   (right after a number without a space makes it bigger)
42 \$\Omega\$ (with a space after the number makes it smaller)

It only works for me with the space after the number. If I delete the space, I just see code.

Why is ALT + 0177 working (which is ±)
Why is ALT + 0178 working (which is ²)
But not ALT + 234? (which is Û)

Btw, I have seen scientific forums with a mathtype/formula editor.
Should be a plugin available for this type of forum 'software'.

I notice there's an Omega smiley.

2 \$\Omega\$
2\$\Omega\$

It still doesn't work for me, unless there's a space or I use image tags 2 and the spacings to cock so it appears superscript.

See my reply #6

I went to a number of web sites that explain alt codes and they look and work fine there. I tried it here and some do, some don't.

Obviously a character set issues, database and/or forum wise, I don't know.

Doesn't matter. Mathjax is so much more than Omega. If it doesn't render, you can still read it.

How does this work now? \$\frac{V}{\Omega}=I\$

Edit: That took a few tries. I wonder if the dude (who's name I forget right at the moment) that came up with the mathjax rendering code for the forum has any thoughts about enabling matthjax in the post preview?

Then that's just the same as all the other smileys, without a space your get this:wtf: with a space:  \$\Omega\$

Thanks Dave.

And thanks apelly too, you started this thread.  :-+

I use this for preview and then copy/paste:

https://cdn.mathjax.org/mathjax/latest/test/sample-dynamic-2.html

(Just have to remember the backslashes in front of the single $ though)

How does this work now? \$\frac{V}{\Omega}=I\$

The formatting will look nicer if surrounded by double-dollar so it is displayed on a separate line:
$${V \over R} = I$$

You can also surround by backslash-open-bracket and backslash-close-bracket, like this:
\[{V \over I}=R\]

Now can we delete  :wtf: and  :horse: ? Having a useful  \$\Omega\$ symbol on the end of the list just serves to highlight the schizophrenic nature of the forum. I am resistant to  and have no resistance to  \$\Omega\$.

\$\Omega\$ doesn't line up too well with text.
Not  , it's the best smilely to express absolute exasperation with everyday frustrations and one of my personal favourites. IMO we've now got a pretty good set of smileys, one just needs be careful how one uses them.  :box:

\$\Omega\$ doesn't line up too well with text.

I made this ohm line up with text: , but unfortunately when I tried to make one like this with a transparent background the graphics editor upset the size. I didn't manage to find an editor that gave me complete control over size and transparency that I knew how to use.

Let's try the Mathjax option: \$ \Omega \$. How does that line up?

Both seem OK. My gif: 30    Mathjax: \$30\space\Omega\$

:wtf: and  are two of the most popular used smileys and have been used for years on this forum. Removing them would be silly because:
a) You are the only one asking for them to be removed
and
b) It would corrupt countless posts that use them, replacing them with the text

I would remove  :box: before I removed the other two.

Doesn't the old saying: a picture is worth a thousand words not apply ?  :-//

Yes it does still apply but I think discourse is not helped with overuse of highly judgemental emoticons. A few well choosen words shouldn't be sacrificed carelessly.
It is not lost on me that I am a mere "gnat's foreskin" away from having the dead horse applied to me on this point. I am thinking I sound like Basil Fawlty on Gourmet Night. That line of emoticons is as appealing to me as a trough of baked beans garnished with a few dead dogs.

I can live with them and I have for many years. They don't really bother me in and of themselves but they do set the tone of discussions here just by their presence. However, that dead horse one is utterly disgusting. You may just as well add a steaming turd up there as well. I'm sure a use for it will turn up sooner rather than later. With its addition I think we have crossed the Rubicon. Or Jumped the Shark.
It's cool if you have the vocabulary to express yourself well with few words, not all can. Reminds me of my departed father in law whose most pointed one word reply was pillock. I'd never heard the term until I met him a few days after meeting my future wife.

The dead horse IMO is a much kinder way of addressing a member than  :blah: that can more easily be taken offence to.
