Can we have an Omega smiley?
« on: August 25, 2016, 08:55:25 pm »
At risk of being "one of those guys"; it looks to me like smileys in the forum are a little icon in some folder with some associated free text. When rendering, the icon is substituted for the text.

If I'm right, a simple smiley that inserts \$\Omega\$ would serve two functions, and be easy to implement. Primarily it'd prompt people to remember that slash dollar are the escape characters to initiate \$\LaTeX\$, but it's also a handy short cut.

At first this didn't make sense, having symbols for emoticons, but now I get that it could be useful.
If someone has a list of useful symbols in the appropriate size then I can add them.
Omega would be :ohms:

I was actually thinking of functionality similar to the url button; it inserts text that you can then edit as desired. It saves a bit of typing, but more importantly it shows the syntax if you've forgotten it. In my imagination an ohms button would literally insert the characters "\$\Omega\$"

I referred to smileys, because they appear to be a shortcut to insert some text and are apparently not too hard to create.

I would use latex a lot more if I didn't have to re-research how to use it every time.

Anyway, I also see no reason to have a static gif shaped like omega. It's only useful if it fits in with the text.

Do the Alt codes work in the forum software, I think I'tried them before and they wouldn't.

Let's try Ohms: Alt234

I don't have any numeric keys on this keyboard, but copy and paste seems to work. I wonder if it has any browser or OS dependencies though. Does everybody else see the 4 symbols above?

Okay, they all worked in preview, but after posting the "omega" is a question mark. Which is weird.

Nice, isn't it?
Two great resources:
http://meta.math.stackexchange.com/questions/5020/mathjax-basic-tutorial-and-quick-reference
http://detexify.kirelabs.org/classify.html

The second one lets you draw that character you want, then gives you its name.

Not really.  Posting will go through a bit more processing than Preview.  Obviously, there is something special happening when you 'Post'.

Then it's going to be something to do with your particular environment.

I'm not familiar with the in's and out's - but there will be someone here that will know.

It was. I had to enable javascript from some place called mathjax.org
I don't remember seeing that here before, only eevblog.com and supplyframe.com

\$\Omega\$  :)   = Omega smiley

So to answer your question - Yes

What is interesting is that there is a time delay - I think it has something to do with the Australian Post Office

I doubt it.

If it was, there would be a fee or charge of some sort...

To add these I will need gif image files of the actual symbols in the appropriate size. I can't seem to find a handy list, even after downloading the entire build and looking at the image file directories  :-//

Seemingly it needs to be about 12 pixels high. Here's a test example (attached) of the ohms symbol. It's not the right quality, but it could be used to test the concept.

Something like this, I guess:

    R = 30

Interesting, some capitals are not interpreted...

They are the same as the Roman letter, they do not need special handling...
