BLOW my FULL-LENGTH pcie card !!!!
« on: June 06, 2024, 02:51:11 pm »
I'm designing a rather formidable pcie card:  ~250W, double-slot.   And full-length, of course.

I want a cooling setup as shown below.   These blowers used to be popular in GPUs, but have since fallen out of favor (in the consumer GPU market).

The blowers go by the name "frameless blower" or "motorized impeller" or some such,  and I can't find a source for them anywhere
(something like this: https://coolcox9.en.made-in-china.com/product/nxIREBsUJNcl/China-D74X25mm-Frameless-Blower-DC-5V-12V-24V-7525-74mm-Centrifugal-Fan.html
would be perfect, except it is a wimpy 4watts;   I figger I need at least 15W.

Does anyone know a manufacturer for these frameless blowers?

Is there no way to use a few 40mm fans? With the end of the card sitting next to the front of the casing due to the length, this could even be better in terms of sucking air from the front instead of from the inside of the PC.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Exactly.  That is Plan B.   The pitch between double-wide pcie cards is 40.64mm.   So 40mm fans will fit, but will violate the max-allowable-thickness in the pcie spec (spec says 39-point-something mm - can't remember exactly... so the violation is 100's of microns...  which'd be fine by me).  40mm fans would also be a bit noisier, two would be slightly pricey.... but the #1 drawback is my boss:  she's never seen such a setup on a production board, so that's that :(

The benefit of 40mm fans is that, thanks to the 1U server market, you can get buy hugely-powerful ones -  when a 60-watt 40mm fan starts to spool up, people run for cover, cuz it sounds like sh*t's about to go down;  they are comically loud.

They are readily available from major electronics component distributors. This means companies like DigiKey, Mouser and Farnell, not Amazon and eBay.

These types of coolers are likely having a comeback soon-ish.
Both nVidia's and AMD's next generation of GPUs are rumored to go back to smaller coolers with radial fan, at least for some of their cards.

If you search under the name "squirrel cage blower", which seems to be what you're describing, you'll find lots of sources.
