Using nuclear weapons to destroy hurricanes is not a good idea, a US scientific agency has said, following reports that President Donald Trump wanted to explore the option.

The Axios news website said Mr Trump had asked several national security officials about the possibility.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the results would be "devastating".

Hurricanes typically affect the US east coast, often causing serious damage.

It's not the first time the idea has been considered.

Following reports of Mr Trump's suggestion, the hashtag #ThatsHowTheApocalyseStarted has been trending on Twitter.

Why don't we just build a huge line of wind turbines in Florida and harness those Hurricanes.    Add to that solar... we have a state that is a battery for the entire country. So much sun and natural forms of energy being dumped through that region.

California Emission controls are why it's possible to breath in LA county these days; and it just took the rest of the world 10-30 years years to catch up to California's lead.

I don´t get who would need the energy, most people leave the area and hurricanes tend to destroy infrastructure, including masts or by flooding underground structures.

There is a thunderf00t video on energy in hurricanes ( Denies Climate Change: house DESTROYED by hurricane! ), as rough estimations. Including people shooting bullets at hurricanes.
A nuke or H bomb might create a relatively hot fire, but only short and outputting a ridiculous amount of energy against a whole ocean of water.

Another theory on how to take influence on the forming of hurricanes would be to have a fleet of autonomous boats/beacons that pump colder water upwards to the surface, so less water evaporates, therefore less likely conditions for hurricanes to form in, no idea if the calculations even would work out. It is a global scale problem, and the result might not even be better (drought, messing with marine life, even stronger hurricanes).

Trying to kill a hurricane with a nuclear bomb is a really dumb idea.

Because, OK, if you are lucky and get a good shot you might kill the hurricane.

But if you miss or just get a bad shot then you have a really, really angry hurricane coming after you. And then what are you going to do?
