I was wondering what had happened to them, it has been quite a while since I've heard them. So, what are all the people out in Central Australia going to do for news especially in emergencies? Is there any alternative that works for them? (say if the power goes out?)

Maybe AM broadcast?

With a maximum range of about 400km even AM broadcast can't cover all of Australia during the day. At night signals may be heard but are likely to be highly interfered with. Radio New Zealand is still audible. And more recently we've had Ozy Radio on 5045 kHz playing music.  Those with SSB receivers can hear coast weather forecasts.
