Of course,if us English speakers just used Austria's real name,Österreich,there would be no confusion.

We can't really sneer---I've seen some silly captions on Oz TV.
The best,although it was years ago,was when they put up the caption "The Legands",for a "veteran's" football match.
I was always under the impression that a "Legand" was a member of a Roman Legion.

In another embarrassing episode,the subtitling over a background briefing during the Queensland floods a few years back,inadvertently brought up the "N" word!

Speaking of ridiculous things on TV, I remember years ago watching Burke's Backyard with teletext captions turned on. I'll never forget when Don Burke chuckled, the captions read [DON GRUNTS AND SNORTS]. Someone at the subtitling centre having a bit of fun?
